"I wrote a song for you today. Help me tell the world!" -KL
Check out Kirby's latest A Song A Day release. You all will definitely enjoy how she switches up her singing style to include some lovely jazz inflections.
Back in February the homie Audio Pilot sent me a track that had been recorded that weekend by SPEAK Easy and Panic. It was among a few that had been done with him on production and the two emcees on the mic. What started as an email introducing me to the newly formed crew going by the name Monster House, became a partnership with TMB and Milwaukee based Uni-Fi Records to present the project. TMB has had ties with MKE since we started back in '09 and we're excited to be part of this LP. With a series of well received singles, we finally present the final product, eleven solid tracks, recorded over the course of six weekends or so. This is Monster House and welcome to the Raiders of the Lost Art. This is storytelling at its' finest. Chea!
As with every Friday, this episode is compiled of dope tracks featured over at RefinedHype and DJBooth throughout the week. I hope this EP helps kick off your weekend. Chea!

Okay, that's the last time I'll mention her age because what's important here is the music. And boy does Mahalia deliver. Folks will make the obvious comparisons to Corinne Bailey Rae and Adele, among others, but I'd rather let Mahalia be Mahalia, as she continues to develop and grow into her own sound. When I first received the email from SoulCulture introducing me to the UK singer/songwriter, I was a bit hesitant. Yes, age was a primary factor (okay, I mentioned age again). But once I watched the interview and began to listen to more of her music, I was impressed.
Today, I've found myself on a bit of a non-Hip-Hop kick and I'm pleased because that caused me to stumble across the very talented Mahalia. So, enjoy the interview below with SoulCulture and check out more from Mahalia here. Chea!
After dropping his debut Straight to the Moon, Rome Duran is back with a track omitted from the EP. I definitely dig this Strawberry Day cut. Sheesh. Hit play and enjoy. Chea!
I spoke with the homie e.d.g.e. the other day. He assured me that Destroy & Rebuild is on the way soon. But in the meantime, he drops a freeverse over BDP's The Bridge is Over for Vancouver DJ Crew The Freshest (Seko Fresco, Marvel, Kutcorners, Rico Uno). Enjoy. Chea!
"It's a vent track addressing some of the issues I've been facing as a
result of what some perceive as my success as an artist. I've never been
able to fully understand the meaning of allowing haters to fuel your
success until now."
The homie John Graham shares the first single from his upcoming project, Magic: Blanc et Noir. With production from Rayvon Red Dah Producah, Graham wants to speak love instead of hate. I dig it. Enjoy.
"THANK YOU BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE.
WE'RE IN NYC :) Because of You I get to sing a song in the BIG CITY:) thank you so much for watching, for telling your friends. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU." -KL
Even though Kirby is in New York for the next few days, the song(s) must go on. Ha! Enjoy days 108 & 109 from her A Song A Day Series. Oh, and if you're in NYC tonight, check Kirby and some other talented singer/songwriters at SOBs. Doors at 7, show at 8. Chea!
A gritty 90's style album for those who grew up on Illmatic, Midnight Marauders, Only Built for Cuban Links, Moment of Truth, and Ready to Die. Behind The Scale is unfiltered, real sh*t on tape.
Latest visuals from Blacastan's "The Master Builder Part II" that's in stores now and is a smart buy. Joint got cuts for days in the 2 cds worth of music.
Yet another gem in a full length album worth brought to us by The Promise. Didn't know what to expect from Squair Blaq and producer Mulatto Patriot, who's very new to me, but I enjoyed it. Skits included, this story in music form took me on a nice journey, very visual, very descriptive. Read more about this album and then download it!
The long awaited, highly anticipated "New Deal" album is Here! Inspired by the current recession MC Squair Blaq (of Animate Objects & the Chicago Afro-beat Project) tells a story of a man who looses his employment to outsourcing, then while heading to the unemployment office his car breaks down and to top it all off after he finally makes it home he discovers that his personal belongings were thrown in the dumpster by a former girlfriend. The album produced and mixed by Mulatto Patriot has plenty of warm summertime sample based production infused with a good amount of live instrumentation. The 16 track Album features Psalm One, Pugs Atomz, Primeridian, Neak, S-Star and Charlie Coffeen of Sidewalkchalk, Kiara Shackelford, Lester Jay, Chris Paquette, The Fail, DJ Limbz & DJ Mr. Krime. Album Artwork by Enzo Moscarella.
