Vibes - "Dead Presidents"

Vibes, a New Jersey based MC, borrows Hova's "Dead Presidents" and puts his own twist on it. First time I've heard of him and he's got my ear interested out the gate. With lyrics like these and a flow that seems like he's on autopilot, this track ends up on my win list. The production does not hurt at all either. Check it.

What I'm Watching: Hopie "It's Beautiful" feat. LuckyIAm

Off of Hopie's new project, Raw Gems, comes a fresh track and video featuring LuckyIAm. I dig the San Fran female emcee. She's been consistently delivering up great music. You get the same here. Enjoy. Chea!

What I'm Watching ... ¡MAYDAY! - Sweat Shop Freestyle

¡MAYDAY!'s Bernz and Wrekonize come through with a new video for a track they put together using El-P's "Time Won't Tell" and in my opinion, I think they did it justice. But I'm a ¡MAYDAY! fan so my opinion may be biased. Haha. Check it out.

"You think I can afford to share? / Newsflash, bitch: The middle class gone. I'm a poorllionaire. / Scraping loose change from bottle caps / keeping an honor that's no longer sacred where the piranhas at."

Directed by Bernz & Wrekonize
Video Produced by EMJ
Edited by Wrekonize

What EMS Is Watching ... "Transition Remix" x @NakiaSaid

"Don't know if it's the Virgo in me or the way that I was raised to be. That keeps me constantly stressing and missing all the great things in this life. Is passing me by. So I've been trying to find things to ground me. Show compassion to my friends and family. Learning how to love without condition. But I forget to love me so easily. Is it how I choose to be?

Well I've decided... well I've decided. Well I've decided. I've decided. I've decided that I forgive me. I forgive me. It's my decision. It's my transition. And I've decided to live my life and not let life live me. I forgive me."
I don't think I could've found something better to kick start your October month than the smooth, mellow sounds of Nakia Henry. I posed a question on Twitter for folks to hit me up with some R&B music because I needed to hear something new, and one of my peeps, @JosephAParker told me about this artist. I checked out her video on her website and suffice it to say, I'm loving it. "Transition Remix" is a song, I think, that we all can relate to at any given point in our lives. It inspires us to let go, and live.

The vocals are dope. The video is stunning. I love the instrumentation and the arrangement. Take a look and a listen. Enjoy! And don't forget to choose to live.

NEW ALBUM: PremRock & Willie Green

Last week was a strong week for full length Hip-Hop projects. A lot of mainstream and indie folks used the last week of September to flex their musical strengths. While at the top of the pile, from a mainstream perspective, was J. Cole, there were strong projects from 9th Wonder, Phonte, J-Live and more.

Last week also saw the release of PremRock (emcee) and Willie Green's (producer) self titled album released by Isolated Wax Records. The New York based duo put together a strong cohesive project, with hard hitting production and dope rhymes. I've said before and I'll say again, the one emcee / one producer projects are my favorites and create such a fluency that is sometimes missed when too many producers are involved on a project. There is a musical chemistry between PremRock and Willie Green, in part because they are friends with a common vision who create a sound that is so in-sync.

I enjoyed their new project with features from C-Rayz Walz, Soul Khan, Has-Lo and Open Mike Eagle, with cuts from Baltimore's DJ Addikt. It's quality from beginning to end.

DJ Brace ''NH 26''

Damn. I dig this track. Off of DJ Brace's instrumental album, Synesthasia available here. It's a solid cut from the talented producer. As J57 of the Brown Bag AllStars put it, "Brace is the definition of dope."

J57 went on to add, "Most people might know of DJ Brace from all of his work with Brown Bag AllStars over the past 2 years - but please keep in mind, this man is a Juno Award winning producer and a multiple Canadian DMC battle champion. He's an extremely humble dude and a close friend of BBAS...so it's only right that we share his music with you!"

Hit play and enjoy. Chea!

Interview: Miss Special x J. Cole

Editor's Note: Miss Special aka Miss Interview strikes again, taking aim at J. Cole for a brief interview. Cole sheds some light on his music, among other things. Fresh interview.
Last week, thanks to Big Von and my internship at 106.1 KMEL, I had the amazing opportunity to very briefly interview J. Cole. We talked about the impact of “The Warm Up”, a video for “Lights Please”, why “In The Morning” was released so many times and his many person perspective rap style.

*Miss Special’s note: This interview was something I did for me; as a long time fan, as a pure appreciator of this man’s music, his journey and the inspiration he gives me. I didn’t do this interview for a “breaking story” and I damn sure didn’t want to ask him the same four questions that everyone else has been asking him for months. But I did want to take just a little bit of time to ask him some things I had wondered for years and really take the opportunity to thank him for the impact his music had on my life during the hardest of times. Plus what do you ask an artist who’s music you just really get? It may not mean much to you, but it’s incredible how much it means to me.

Interview: Miss Special x Hopie

I recently caught up with Hopie to talk about her newest album "Raw Gems" (available now!). We spoke about working with 6Fingers and Exile, the meaning behind the title, why it stuck for so long and the features. We also spoke about the reasons behind the track "No Chase", her line "It's the same me, just more lyrical", the videos for "Space Case" as well as "Like Love", the release party in Sacramento today (September 30th) and what's next for her; including more videos and a new album.

G-Eazy "Mercedes Benz (The American Dream)" feat. Janis Joplin

Man, whatcha know about Janis Joplin? I've got a few Joplin cuts in my iTunes collection and Mercedes Benz is one of my favorite joints. Joplin just had this incredible voice. G-Eazy lends that voice to his new track. I dig it. Hit play and enjoy. Chea!
I was digging through my mom's record collection and stumbled upon Janis Joplin's 'Pearl' record. I had heard "Mercedes Benz" before, but it had been a few years. It was one of those moments where I instantly jumped up, and decided it would be a dope song to flip. The concept is so relate-able, and the passion is so present in her voice. The original is an acapella, so I wrote some chords and called my homie John Michael over to lay down some acoustic guitar parts down behind her vocal. I'm stoked on how it came out.

What I'm Watching: Lyriciss "The Balance"

Drop a dope track. Follow it with a equally fresh video. Earlier this week Lyriciss released the title track for his upcoming project expected out next year. Directed by Langston Sessoms of Chop 'N Shoot Films, they use DC as the backdrop of the video. Fresh set of visuals. Enjoy. Chea!
