Alright. So let's have this conversation. I posted this video over on my tumblr yesterday and I have had a few side convos on twitter about the youngin' Tyler, the Creator of the Odd Future crew. What's your thoughts?
I had all but ignored his music until the video for "Yonkers" dropped. To clarify, I had ignored the music mostly because I wasn't interested and not because I had heard it and didn't like it. I mean, I heard bits and pieces, mostly because of the fuss about Earl Sweatshirt and his music.
Anyway, "Yonkers" is the first track off of Tyler the Creator's upcoming album Goblin. In watching this video I'm not sure whether I should be impressed or disturbed or perhaps the point is to be both. It seems like, based on my experience with Earl, these guys are all about shock and awe with their music and videos to match. Not to say that's a bad thing. This video, while simple is dope. The angles of which it is shot, the black and white and what's in focus and out of focus and how that changes constantly is brilliant.
And then there is the rhyme. The punchlines. The content. The flow.
But I still don't know what to make of all of this.
I've watched this video more than a dozen times and I circle back to the same place, which leads to the following statement, "I like it but why."

Anyway, it's a joint that Kanye passed on because it didn't fit the new concept when he changed the direction of his album. Like I mentioned, Canadian emcee e.d.g.e. jumped on the beat putting out Letter to the Editor and now another favorite, Chuuwee, delivers JJ Evans. I'm really happy that two dope emcees that I respect are the ones I've heard rhyme over this Premier beat. Chuuwee is an emcee you definitely have to keep an eye out for. This new The Hollowz has been sitting on my desktop for a few days. I finally had the opportunity to dig into Dreams Of Sex And Flying. Pretty dope project from the crew that delivered The Premonition EP last year. The Hollowz are no strangers to the blog, having been featured in our Milwaukee Journey to Hip-Hop series and on our Milwaukee's Best compilation.
