What I'm Watching ... Chris Webby - "Stranger" (Live)

Interesting difference when you add a live drummer and DJ to the mix. Check it out.

For some time itsbongoboy.com has been thinking about bringing artists and bands together to do a series of performances to get a more intimate vies of the artist. On November 13, 2010 we had our first artist, Chris Webby. Chris brought a drummer and DJ to our studio. This was Chris’s first time performing with his drummer, Billy Beats and the result was amazing. Check it out.

EVENT: The 7th Annual Hartford Hip-Hop Festival at Hartford City Hall, Nov. 27

It's about that time. Word up! If you're in Connecticut, come check this out. Great event. I'll definitely be in the building.

"If you’ve listened to any hip-hop, you’ve probably heard mention of the “Four Elements” at some point. These elements — DJing, emceeing, b-boying (breakdancing), and grafitti — are considered the foundations of hip-hop culture. What you may not know is that these elements were first codified by Afrika Bambaataa, a gang member turned social activist from the Bronx. Bambaataa, who was also an innovator in the use of turntables as instruments, transformed his neighborhood gang into the Universal Zulu Nation, the world’s first hip-hop organization. The Zulus, now 37 years old, work to combine a fun atmosphere with a positive world view.

Here in Connecticut, Hartford resident Jose Camacho is at the center of the Zulu Nation’s 860 Chapter. Camacho, 32, is shy and soft-spoken; his slow, thoughtful cadence comes off more hippie than hip-hop. “I joined Zulu when I was 14. I was in middle school and I used to dance [to] house music when I was a kid. All the cool dancers joined Zulu Nation. Because of my age I had to lie a little bit — you had to be at least 15. At first I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I thought it was just a dance crew. But after a few years, going to New York, and meeting forefathers like KRS-1, Afrika Bambaataa … ” Camacho doesn’t finish the sentence, but the reverence in his tone makes the rest of the thought clear. He had stumbled upon a rabbit hole that led straight to hip-hop’s founding fathers."

Download ... Savant of RAREBREED - "The Delayed Entry EP" (@SavantRAREBREED)

Check out this free EP by Savant. Not a bad EP at all. I was easily vibing to some of the tracks on here.

Savant of RAREBREED:

Tucson, AZ resident, by way of El Paso, TX and Chicago, IL, Gregory "Savant" Daggett has always possessed a passion for music and literary arts. Involved in general music since age 7, and a trumpet player since age 10, he wasn't officially exposed to hip hop until age 12. Although no particular emcee caught his ear right away, he was intrigued with the entire concept of an individual or a group of people speaking over instrumentation in an intensely rhythmic lyrical form, oftentimes telling semi-autobiographic tales relating to a fictionalized counterpart. He became inspired to write and partake of the art of emceeing after hearing the 1999 classic "Black on Both Sides" by Dante Smith and honed his emceeing chops at the lunch room ciphers of Chicago high schools Whitney M. Young Magnet and George Washington Carver. He has since dedicated every verse, every bar and every word to achieving the ever elusive sense of balance in this hallowed art form. His debut release, "The Delayed Entry EP" serves as proof.

The Delayed Entry EP Track Listing:
1) The Lyricist ThreeMix feat. SimONE (prod. by RJD2, Cease & Eka the Madd Samplist)
2) Illest You've Never Heard (Could We Go) (prod. by V-Sharp)
3) Concrete Techniques feat. Three60 the Universal Ruler (prod. by Oren J.)
4) You Know feat. Rich Jones & Kasparov (prod. by Montana Macks)
5) Bottom To the Top (prod. by Satchill Head)
6) 'Til Death Do Us Part (prod. by DJ Jesaya)
7) Marry a Memory (prod. by prod. by GRANDPA-J®)
8) Perfect Profession (prod. by DR+)
