In Memory of Micheal "Eyedea" Larsen

R.I.P. Micheal "Eyedea" Larsen 1981-2010

My man Eyedea was an artist in every sense of the word. I still remember being a part of the Hip Hop Union at Roseville Area High School. Me and Snakebird ran into Eyedea then, and were very well aware of the genius he'd become. Every now and then we'd run into each other and just talk about those times back in the day. It wasn't until Spring Jam '98 at the U of M when I'd see him again, and more and more he was becoming a true genius. Every freestyle was with clarity and self-awareness, and his uncanny rhyming ability definitely made his rise continuous. I still remember stories when me and Mike Lover started hosting The Beat Box on Radio K, Eyedea would come on to freestyle and would just blow us away each and everytime. He was definitely one of the best talents the Twin Cities have come to know. I still remember going to Mike Lover's house after a night class once he told me that he recorded the Blaze Battle, which Eyedea won, and staying at his house until 10:30pm avoiding calls from my parents while I sat and rooted all the way for Eyedea, as he delivered his lines standing tall and making us all in the local scene proud.

After my travails in radio, and starting up Background Noise Crew, we were honored to be graced by Eyedea twice. Phingaz was working with him on Carbon Carousel, and was beyond elated when he contributed a verse to "Dead Wallets" off Sinthesis' "Movement 4:6" album. I still remember the moment myself, Phingaz and T.Q.D were all sitting in my car listening to "Dead Wallets," and being blown away by Eyedea's verse. Little did we know that kindness would return when Eyedea gave his blessing to Phingaz to cover "Here For You," from Oliver Hart's "How Eye One The Write Too Think" for "Everybody Does This, Vol. 1." Just recently I included his song, "Coaches" featuring Carnage for my Definitive Minnesota Playlist for Reviler. The freestyle prior to the song was still the main reason why I included such a tune on my list.

While I am devastated and saddened about the loss, and grieving for his family and friends who knew him so closely, I want to be selfish enough to say that I wish he was still here. I continue to be in sadness, disbelief and shock that we lost such a wonderful and amazing person, a person who pulled me and many others to the side to catch up and see how things were going. As I sit here, blasting my vinyl of the "Pushing Buttons" 12", I recall the greatness and amazing person that Eyedea was. He was one of the most kindest and down to earth people I ever knew in the local scene and was part of my inspiration (along with the rest of Rhymesayers) to pursue my dreams of doing radio and hip-hop. Michael "Eyedea" Larsen, may you rest in peace. You might not be here in the physical sense, but you are still with us, in every waking moment. Especially when you recited the following from "Hay Fever," which I would say is fitting:

‎"Winter takes the warm away, spring takes the cold away, summer takes the rain away and fall took away my friend."

Thank you Eyedea, for everything.

He's currently working on his newest project, One Step Away ... Miles 2 Go. The Bronx born emcee does his thing and after hearing a few of his new tracks, I'm excited to hear the new project. Anyway, this week Dremur decided to take the challenge. Check out how he answered five random questions, after the jump.

Download ... Olivier Daysoul - "Mr. Saint Louis EP"

Here's an amazing EP I got in the email from Oddisee. Olivier Daysoul's EP got me on some zoned out mode. I didn't know what to expect but I do know that Oddisee won't associate with some untalented individuals. This EP is dope. R&B, funk, soul, lyrics, productions. It's got what I look for in this kind of music. He's giving it away for free for the 1st 1000 people to grab it off his Bandcamp page. Hurry. You don't wanna miss out.

I've always felt fortunate when it comes to the artist I have at my disposal. They're talented, dedicated, self sufficient and above all, they're my friends. For those of you who don't know, Olivier Saint Louis aka "Olivier Daysoul" is one of my best friends & has been for sometime. We came together on this project to bring you something we started when we first met, a soul project. Our careers have taken us down many paths but we've always wanted to write, produce & record classic material.
The first 1,000 downloads are free, after that it will be available for "name your own price". The download includes:
Four Original Tracks
Instrumentals
Acapellas [BPM Included]
Von Pea Of Tanya Morgan Remix of "In The Now'

Take Three: Kool G Rap "4, 5, 6"

"It's a damn shame, what I gotta do just to make a dollar..."
Kool G Rap is a legend in our minds and his own right. The man knew how to tell a good street story, and balance that with a verbal acrobat ability regarding multisyllabics and diction. This album is very much a crowning achievement because Kool G took what he already knew from such classics he delivered as "Streets of New York," and pretty much put that into a changing rap world that was getting more of an organized crime sensibility. In turn, "4, 5, 6" (common winning combination in Cee-Lo or dice) provided some of the apex of Kool G's creativity, in an album that largely followed up his separation from DJ Polo. If nothing else, this is Kool G's mastery of street/mafioso rap.
As usual, let's break down three selections. Take three is a chance to take albums that are already familiar and regarded highly in rap, and deliver three tracks from one album to open a new listener's ears to that said classic. So without further adieu, let's get it started (absolutely no Black Eyed Peas).

Soap-box & Uncommon Records "No Dough, No Show Compilation"

You can always expect a quality project from the good folks over at Uncommon Records, led by owner/producer Nasa. The latest project, a compilation, drops as a tie in to Soap-Box's recent Fall clothing line. The project includes work from Willie Green, Kitchen Khemistry, Adam Warlock, Agartha Audio, Taiyamo Denku and Short Fuze, among others. It's a fresh project. Check it.
The compilation ties together the themes of Soap-Box' recent Fall clothing line and centers in on struggling musicians from a first person perspective.  Each of the artists on the album created a track about the difficulties of making music in an era when everyone wants it for free.  From the artistic, to the financial implications, it's all laid out in stunning fashion.  The best thing that can come from this release is a further understanding of the relationship between artist and listener and the realization that we are all living under the same difficulties in life.
