The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Cee Reed - "King of Dragonmen"

We're not done with our search here in the state of Connecticut. Here, I bring you an MC by the name of Cee Reed out of Danbury, CT. He's been putting in work for some time now and maybe you need to hear it. This track is titled "King of Dragonmen" off his latest album Fight or Flight. Check it out.
In the late 90's CEE took a stab at production, picking up tips from long time friends Stroe, Dirt E Dutch and UVJT. CEE also gained knowledge in the background areas of music. Interning at local record label and getting a certification in Live and Studio Engineering. 2003 CEE REED created Northeast Abilities, which went on to develop a local scene for underground Hip Hop. 5 years as a solo artist CEE REED has released 3 albums and has appeared on several mix cds. Steady on the grind to get his name out CEE REED has a great start. Featured in the New York Times, opening for acts De La Soul, Lupe Fiasco C-Rayz Walz, J-Live, One B Lo, Ok Go, Louis Logic, and Troublemakers to name a few.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: OnCue "Crashing Down"

I've known OnCue for a minute. I have some some 100 plus tracks of his in my iTunes library, some of which were never officially on projects. He's grown a lot as an emcee. He stays working on his music and his concepts are well thought out. Dude did a mixtape called "Cueyfornication" that he dropped last summer over all Red Hot Chili Pepper tracks. It was insane. Earlier today he leaked the first joint off "Cuey Sings the Blues", presented by 2DopeBoyz, Mick Boogie, Terry Urban and Christopher Truth. The young dude is going places and continues to push the boundries with his music. While the Connecticut emcee is in NY for school, I had to include him in the Connecticut installment of The Journey to Hip-Hop. Look out for "Cuey Sings the Blues" dropping at some point in July. Enjoy.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Plus - "Choke Hold"

Check out the homie Plus out of Stamford, CT. I forget how I met him but I think it was from a mutual friend that I may have featured on here. Dude hit me up after I told him about the "Journey" we were about to go on. He couldn't wait to be a part of it. Personally, I'm having fun with this. I heard some tracks off his latest album "The Turning Point", which he has written, produced and mixed all himself, and if I know our viewers like I think I do, you're gonna like this. Plus has opened up for Snoop Dogg in Hartford, CT, to House of Pain and La Coka Nostra in Massachusetts to Bone Thugs N' Harmony and Mo Thugs in Florida. Anyways, enough talking....hit the play button!

What I'm Watching ... Alicia Keys "Un-Thinkable (I'm Ready)"

You already know how O and I feel about Alicia Keys (just listen to our commentary on ep 6 of the podcast). Shit, I could also care less about her homewrecking status right now, even though I'd like to still punch Swizz Beatz in the face (I think O would agree) just because. She looks great in this vid (especially the shots in front of the bushes or whatever). Caught the vid from the good folks over at www.thisisrealmusic.com. Check it.

When She Speaks, You Listen: @ladyblogga "Deal or No Deal"

Who needs a record deal nowadays? Do artists enjoy having to compromise their creativity for a ‘target” audience? Do we really need the industry to peddle and crank out mainstream junk tunes that nobody wants to hear? Nope. We sure don’t. In this day and age with the internet and a worldwide audience at our fingertips, artists do not need to acquire a record deal at all. With the right networking moves and a daily grind, artists can get their music made and sold all on their own. There is really no immediate need for record companies. They are good for financial co-signing. We all know that if you package crap nicely, people will buy it and even like it. Look at Soulja Boy. Not a lick of talent but he had a record company behind him who packaged him to a target audience and his talentless ass sold millions of records. It makes no sense.

Artists can do the same thing using the internet and their will to “make it”. If you have thousands of followers on Twitter, there is no reason why you can’t package and sell your product to your followers to start the buzz and make money. Joell Ortiz is living proof that record company people are shaaadyyy. If he put out his own CD, he could charge $5 bucks a download for each of his thirty-five thousand followers. That is a lot of money for something he is good at and loves. Artists can actually make a good amount of money doing this. The money won’t be industry money though. You won’t be able to borrow and rent houses, cars and jewelry like the other rappers do. But at least you will have your cash up front minus the BS, contracts and red-tape. You will still have your dignity because you won’t have to conform to an industry image. And your project will come out just how you like it because your creativity wasn’t compromised to fit an industry mold.

Personally I think this is the way to go. I mean you won’t be making millions of “industry dollars” and your CD won’t contain a 25 page CD leaflet but your music will be what your fans really want to hear. These artists don’t understand that if they did their own thing, they could put these companies out of business. The internet is bringing the music industry to a whole ‘nother level and people need to start taking advantage.

Check It ... Tanika Charles "Can I Be Yours?"

This single has been out there for a bit, so I might be a little late on the post. Do I care? Nope. Why? Because maybe you haven't heard it yet. Shoot, maybe you have. Either way, when it came out doesn't change the dopeness of the track. Turn your speakers up and vibe to this joint from Tanika Charles, the Canadian songstress. Yeah, you're welcome.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Sketch Tha Cataclysm - "Virginia Slim featuring Seme Rock"

Here's another Waterbury, CT native and Antfarm Affiliate that's been holding it down for Hip-Hop from here in Connecticut to brief stints in Minnesota and elsewhere. Sketch Tha Cataclysm is a talented MC. Separates himself from a lot of other artists I know musically and taught himself a lot of ins and outs in recording and mixing throughout the years, from what he's told me in conversations. Definitely a motivated go-getter. Guy doesn't sit still. Don't believe me? Check the shows he performs in. You will most likely catch him without his shoes, a staple of his. Very energetic dude. Haha. Anyways, check out this track he hooked me up with for the "Journey" featuring a vocally gifted beat boxer by the name of Seme Rock.

This joint is going to be on the compilation "The Set Off" my boy Botzy out of Minneapolis is putting out. It features production from me, old school panning and Seme Rock on the vocal cuts.

Enjoy.

TMB's Track of the Week 5/11/10: "Dont Lose Me" BLCTXT

I posted this joint back in December. It's off of King I Divine's "Crown Jewelz Pt 2" beat mixtape. BLCTXT and King I Divine have collaborated on a few different projects. I choose this joint for the track of the week because it popped up on shuffle and I'm still feeling the joint. Hope you dig it too. Here's "Dont Lose Me" from BLCTXT, the Track of the Week. Enjoy.
