Q&A with Prophetic
I keep telling heads don't sleep on Milwaukee. I don't have any connection to Wisconsin other than by music. They definitely haven't disappointed.
Prophetic is just another example.
I first ran across Proph a few months back when I was sent his Entrepreneur video. I immediately thought that the track and video were dope. Then recently I was sent his new video, Golden Helmet. After hearing these two joints, I asked him to send me some more tracks. He did. I listened. He's dope.
The 24-year-old emcee out of Milwaukee definitely hustles hard for his music, while running an indie label with his two business partners. His music is going places.
"I want to see my music reach a national level," Prophetic said in a recent interview. "So I plan to use my natural talent to get me in the door and allow me to display my business skills, which are becoming stronger than my actual music talent ironically."
Umbrella Music Group has a hell of a lot of talent and Proph is just one of those artists.
I definitely dig his sound! I recently reached out to him for a Q&A …
The Mad Bloggers: It seems like a lot of good music coming out of Milwaukee, do you think people are surprised with hip-hop coming out of the area?
Prophetic: I definitely think people are surprised but it’s actually funny to me. My city has the same problems that all other cities have, if not worse if you check statistics. Its just not a hotbed for the industry right now so people outside of the city may not know about it but this music has always existed.
TMB: Who are your musical influences?
Proph: My musical influences range … Frankie Beverly & Maze, Isley Brothers, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, Scarface, Jay-Z, Juvenile, Aaliyah, Jack Johnson, Coldplay and Maxwell. I literally listen to everything.
TMB:How would you describe your sound?
Proph: My sound has been compared to Nas, Jay-Z, Kanye etc. I would however say I'm just a real artist and a real person. I express myself. My music is very personal.
TMB:Who do you work with on your music?
Proph: I've worked with a lot of Milwaukee artists. The Umbrella (Music Group) consists of myself, Ka$h, Yodot (Royal Fam), Misen Lync: Maal Himself, TKS and Toine Jay. Tay Butler and our engineer/producer Adlib.
TMB: What's the track that you think really defines who you are as an artist?
Proph: The track that defines me best would have to be "Entrepreneur".
TMB:What’s a highlight to date in regards to pushing your music?
Proph: My biggest accomplishment thus far is the release of my album "Mo Profit Mo Progress", which has gained not only street acclaim but a lot of attention from the media and radio around the Midwest. I also have a growing relationship with Pharrell and Star Trak, which has been helping me increase my buzz and major label chances.
TMB:What's the hardest thing you're finding out that has to do with your music?
Proph: The hardest thing with music is learning the proper routes to take in terms of getting exposure and new ears. In Milwaukee, there's no blueprint so people are trying anything to get in the door. It’s always steps though. That's where business skills come into place. That's where I really feel we set ourselves apart from other artists.
TMB:What projects are you currently working on?
Proph: Well besides the MPMP album available on iTunes, I have a mixtape called "Mo Progress Mo Problems", which is downloadable for free at umbrellasup.com. I'm still recording but I've been flying to a lot of other places, building my network and utilizing my resources. Music will always be my main asset but I have a saying: "My most important talks take place over drinks or lunch. Not over beats."

J. Holiday - Drake Diss?
Is J. Holiday going at Drake? Or is he going at all R&B cats using auto-tune to do what vocally talented R&B artists should be doing? Either way, kinda sounds like maybe he should've tweaked his voice using some kind of effect. I think dude missed some notes. Haha.

#MusicMonday ... Michael Jackson - "Man in the Mirror"
When I was a kid I would sing this song all the time. While I couldn't sing it very well, I could definitely do my thing when it came to lip syncing the joint and performing for family (you know how it is: "Q come down here and do that Michael Jackson"). This is one of my favorite MJs songs! I think with so much going on in the world, this is a fitting song to share on this Music Monday! I've been saying it for a few months but this video would be dope with an updated version, with scenes of Katrina, September 11th, the Iraq War, Darfur and more. I'm throwing the idea out there, if you do it, hit me with the link when it's complete. Anyway, happy Monday and enjoy!
