TheSeKondElement x 3rd Degree "Change Will Come"
It's here the first official song of the 100 Days of Summer Music Project & the debut single from the band, 3rd Degree Live! We couldn't be more excited!
Having the audacious ideology & Unremitting Belief in the Revolutionary power of Inspiration to Stimulate change. HUBRIS.
We call it the soundtrack to our movement, even though when we began writing the song that wasn't our intention. This song just embodies what we believe in and stand for. Even our tours are specially designed to bring our causes to the forefront using our common talent: music. We raise awareness for Sickle Cell & Diabetes and live daily with the goal of helping others along the way. Many encourage you to look back & grab somebody once you've climbed the ladder of success. While, this is a good notion, we strive to do one better by making sure those around us and in our community are never too far in our rearview. We endeavor to help others climb as we climb.
The music was composed by Bettis, lyrics by TheSeKondElement & Bettis, bass line by BassMonsterTiff, Guitar by Ross Carlson, Trumpet by Chris Cotton, & Saxophone by Etienne Stoufflet.
3rd Degree Live is made up of Bettis (Drums), Merell Burkett (Keys), Ross Carlson (Guitar), Chris Cotton (Trumpet), Josh Hawkins (Bass), & Etienne Stoufflet (Sax).
TheSeKondElement, Bettis, & BassMonsterTiff are collectively known as The H.U.B.R.I.S. Tour.

NEW RELEASE: TheSeKondElement "The Fall From Love: Alpha"
TheSeKondElement returns with a new project. Released last week, she continues a mean streak of putting out quality music. I dig the new work. I'll let her explain the back story to The Fall From Love. Enjoy. Chea!
The Fall From Love is not a mixtape. I wouldn't even call it an album. The Fall From Love is an audio journal complemented by music. Each track is another entry; each entry chronicles a journey that is at the core a universal shared experience. We've all been through it: the fall from love, the fall from grace, the fall from favor, eminence, losing faith, & finding it again.

TheSekondElement "What Would You Be Like?"
New Orleans's based female emcee TheSekondElement returns with new music inspired by a friend's tumblr post. After a bit of an intentional hiatus, she hadn't written new music in a while and struggled when she tried. But as she said, "sometimes the simplest things are the biggest catalysts", and after reading the tumblr post, this track poured out. When I first heard the Mindreader produced cut, I knew she was back and focused. I've been a fan of her work and I dig where she's going. Hit play and enjoy. Chea!

Artist Spotlight: TheSeKondElement, Returns
After a brief hiatus from music, TheSeKondElement returns, refreshed and ready to go. We've been featuring her work on the site for sometime now and I’ve always dug her style. She goes deeper with that more than surface level rap. College education and full of ambition, with roots in spoken word, TheSekondElement is out to say something important. You should definitely listen. She goes international with her latest featuring London emcee, Jai and produced by UK producer, Poetree. Check out the track and get to know TheSekondElement a little more after the jump. Chea!

Check It (4/26/11): Fresh Daily, TheSeKondElement and The Brown Bag AllStars
I love music. There really is no secret there. Every day tons of projects drop and some aren't really worth the digital space they take up.
Fresh Daily returns with "Say Yes" off of The Quiet Life dropping May 3rd. Produced by Shuko and Fonty, this Fresh Daily track is straight head nod inducing. The homie Fresh Daily always brings the quality through his music. I'm definitely looking forward to The Quiet Life. You should be too. Also, look out for an interview with him coming soon to The Mad Bloggers Show. In the words of Fresh Daily "let this be your spring/summer anthem! It feels GOOOOOOOOD!" Chea!
TheSeKondElement has found herself on the blog a few times. There something about her sound, rooted in spoken word, that I've always appreciated it. "Heaven Sent" is the first single off The Korner of Ahmir & Hillman, due out released April 28. Inspired by their trip to SXSW, TheSekondElement teams up with drummer Bettis for a pretty fresh project. She describes the project simply as, "just me and Bettis jammin’, vibin’, doing what we do best together but usually on stage. Now fans can it home.” Enjoy "Heaven Sent" and keep your eyes and ears open for The Korner of Ahmir & Hillman.
Ever since exchanging a series of emails with J57 back when we booked Soul Khan for the IHD x TMB Independent's Day Showcase, he's been blessing my inbox with great cuts from Brown Bag AllStars members and affiliates. Earlier today J57 hit me up with the new Brown Bag AllStars cut "Crumbling Down" produced by Mr. Green. This shit right here? THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE? Yeah, it's dope. According to J57, "we're hard at work in the studio wrapping up our debut album (due out next year), so in the meantime we decided that we'll drop a double-disc project of rare & unreleased material on May 17." So, enjoy "Crumbling Down" leading up to their May 17th drop. Chea!

TheSeKondElement & Bettis in 6th St Can Hear It
TheSeKondElement & Bettis in: 6th St Can Hear It from TheSeKondElement TheACE on Vimeo.
TheSeKondElement has been featured on the site a few times. I dig her sound. She has this old school vibe with new school bars. Her rhymes are deep and always well thought out. It's like spoken word meets a dope beat. She's talented. Anyway, she was down at SXSW (like the rest of the music universe) last week. I caught this video from her camp as her and drummer Bettis take over 6th Street in Austin with a live performance. You gotta love this type of energy. Dope. Enjoy the vid.

TheSeKondElement "The Graduate."
"Because I'm black and educated..."
It's odd how when someone returns from jail they return to more fanfare than someone who returns from college. What's up with that? It's odd that if a person goes off to school or takes pride in their education their accomplishments are brushed off with a "oh, this n-gga trying to be smart." What's up with that?
Our school system and community are both jacked.
Before my blogging days I was heavy into working with youth. For ages I worked with young people after school and during the summer. For a while I spent some time in a few inner city middle school classrooms getting young folk ready for high school and college, which included transitions and making decisions that were based on more than what their friends were doing or going. Sometimes that included decision making that wasn't popular among their peers.
I also spent some time working with youth in juvenile detention centers on the weekends.
During this same timeframe, I spent every afternoon running an after school program in suburbia as the director. I saw how differently young folks looked at education in those three settings. And how their parents looked at it. And how people from their surroundings looked at it. Some valued education. Some were just going through the motions.
At the end of every week I was exhausted.
Anyway, recently while cleaning up my music library I stumbled upon this track from TheSeKondElement. The Graduate (off of her The Kommencement LP) made me think about a lot of my experiences with youth. And the conversations we had about education. The Graduate is a powerful cut. I dig it. Join the debate down low in the comment section. In the meantime, hit play, enjoy.

What I'm Watching ... TheSeKondElement "Closer" LIVE!
We featured this joint as the track of the week. It's fresh. TheSeKondElement's "Closer" is a smooth flow over the Goapele track of the same name. It's dope. I caught the visuals from a live performance and figured I'd share that too. Video shot and edited by Kenneth Allen. Enjoy.
