The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Roc Doogie & Dirt E. Dutch - "Who Figured"
Big shoutout to IndieFeed Hip Hop for hitting us up with this "exclusive" track by Roc Doogie and Dirt E. Dutch. Danbury, CT knows about these cats. Shoot, the state of Connecticut should know about them. And if they don't, they're missing out on Hip-Hop. I don't b.s. you. Roc Doogie, 1/4 of Phenetiks, holds it down on this track titled "Who Figured" off his upcoming album, "My Mom Thinks I'm Awesome". Anyone who knows me has to know I definitely dig that album title. Haha. Anyways, check it peoples.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: The Skinny Boys - "Jock Box" (Bonus)
I had to throw it back, waaaaay back for this journey. A little history for the site. Didn't know Connecticut went this far back with Hip-Hop, did you?! Haha. Check it.
Via Wikipedia -
Skinny Boys were a rap group originally out of Bridgeport, Connecticut, with members Shockin' Shawn, Superman Jay, & The Human Jock Box. The Skinny Boys were directly influenced by The Fat Boys; and The Human Jock Box was directly influenced by The Human Beat Box from The Fat Boys. They started their career on the Bush Label, a small independent local label run by Rhonda Bush.
The first release was a twelve inch single titled Awesome b/w "Skinny Boys" in 1985. New York based label Warlock soon recognized their talents and signed them to their label in 1986. That year they released two twelve inch singles Jockbox & Unity, as well as an LP title "Weightless". Featured on the Weightless LP were a handful of human beatbox songs like Jockbox & Get Funky.
The group went on to sign with Jive Label and have a handful of peripheral releases including LP's "Skinny & Proud" & "Skinny (They cant get enough)".
Not to be confused with the british rock band 'The Skinny Boys'

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Apathy
Apathy is probably the most known emcee out of Connecticut. We've featured him on the blog a few times, including video from his recent live show at Toad's Place, tracks from his new album and features with other artists. The dude is dope. He's been dope. And at this rate, will always be dope. We definitely had to give Apathy a solo shout out on the Connecticut installment of our Journey to Hip-Hop series. This track, "True Love" featuring Phonte is off Apathy's sophomore LP, "Wanna Snuggle?" released late last year. The full project is dope too. Check Apathy out, if you haven't already.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Milo Sheff
Hartford, Connecticut's very own Milo Sheff has been at this Hip-Hop thing for years. We got a lot of dope artists in CT that needs to see the light. Read his bio, check out the tracks and give us your thoughts.
Hartford, Connecticut native Milo Sheff is going to make his mark on Hip-Hop history in many ways. He delivers with a style unlike any MC in the industry and he writes all his own songs that all seem to be hits. With the arrival of Connecticut's first major commercial urban radio station in 2003, Milo Sheff invaded airwaves with consistent DJ promos and has had a state record of 14 different songs featured on the top rated HOT 8 at 8 countdown. Milo's over-saturation of his bouncy delivery and catchy hooks set the tone for a starving Hip-Hop scene in the hidden market of Hartford, CT. Milo's first single "Last Call" was the first Connecticut Rap record to be added to rotation at WZMX, and his second single "Wynd Up" received BDS spins on WZMX, WPHH, WKSS, WKCI, KKWD, and WDLT, among others. In 2004, he once again broke down doors with the in-store release of "SHEFF HAPPENZ" birthing the idea of a mixtape album which included a DVD containing a BET Uncut music video and a documentary on his not so average life behind the spot light. Shortly after this, he released the highly anticipated album "Shapeshifter" nationwide that received 5 stars on iTunes. Through radio airplay, special appearances, and live shows, Milo's name is respected among rappers and fans alike. Milo also always demands the crowds attention with his off the wall live performances which have brought him on an overseas tour along with opening for major hip-hop all-stars such as DMX, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z & Mary J. Blige across the United States.
Currently he is gearing up to independently release another long awaited album that was recorded, engineered, mixed and mastered by Mr. Sheff himself. The title of the new release is "TABLE OF CONTENTS". This CD will be released worldwide sometime in the next couple of months. In the meantime, you can check out some of his new tracks from the new album along with some of the older tracks here under his songs page. You can also keep in touch and updated on everything Milo Sheff from his MySpace page which is www.myspace.com/msheff. You can purchase all of his past releases on iTunes or CDBaby.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Phenetiks - "Shootout Number 9 featuring Deto-22 and The Protege"
Deto-22 is a cool dude. Real humble. Real down to earth. Really into music. The group, Phenetiks, is mainly out of Waterbury. According to Deto, that's where the magic happens. Haha. Here's some info about them direct from the source and check out the track they got out. Not your average!
Phenetiks:
The amalgamation of MCs Roc Doogie and The Protege, producer and part time MC Deto-22, and DJ Sircumference. This crew within the Antfarm Affiliates crew has been around for a long time, since it's inception in 1994, and is constantly working on projects whether as a group or solo/side projects. Collectively putting out four projects since 2006, with two to follow this year Roc Doogie's "My Mom Thinks I'm Awesome" and the next, untitled 3rd Phenetiks album. Their second album "Revolutionary Non-Pollutionary Mechanical Wonder" was released in 2007 as part of Rawkus Records' "Rawkus 50" project.
"Shootout Number 9" an exclusive look into the next Phenetiks album that features Deto-22 and The Protege.
Interesting production note...both halves of the song share the same exact bass, kick, snare and rhythm pattern which plays alone for a two bar piece in the middle.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Mavbeatz (Interview & Instrumentals)
Right out of New Haven, Connecticut, the up and coming producer, Mavbeatz, hit me up with some music he wanted to share for the blog. I know the homie. I heard his previous work. When this journey stopped in my own home state, he came to mind soon after. Years before, I heard him working on remixing arguably one of the greatest MCs in my time's album. I kept that in memory for future reference. Now, here we are, a few years later and he's got more work. I'm here to give it to you. Definitely something I'm digging. I'm sure this ain't the last you gonna hear of the dude. I hit Mav up with some questions so y'all can get to know who he is and what he's about. Check the interview then bump the beats. Let us know what you think.
What kind of music influences you to produce?
Seriously, anything and everything you can imagine. From Progressive Rock to Electro House to Indie. But mostly 70's Soul and 90's Hip Hop.
Who do you look up to as a producer?
J. Dilla is the best. Kanye, Premo, 9th Wonder. The Neptunes are dope. All the usual suspects. Dangermouse and Madlib definitely. I like a lot of beats by DJ Toomp and Don Cannon too.
What kind of audience are you trying to reach?
Anybody who appreciates good music of anykind. People who aren't zombies. People who don't watch American Idol haha. Anybody who knows the best music tends to not be in the Top 40.
Who would you love to work for in the industry?
Work for? As far as label? Most people would probably say some Rap label. But I wanna be on XL Recordings with a variety of artists like The Cool Kids, Radiohead and Vampire Weekend... As far as work with? Mos Def, Chip tha Ripper is dope, Kanye, CuDi and the rest G.O.O.D. Music, Clipse, Andre 3000. Anyone who tends to think outside the box.
Have you worked with anyone so far?
Besides that I've worked with a few artists in New Jersey (Gambino Cappacino, Kyoto Jones). I've worked with a few dudes in New Haven. There's not too much talent to choose from around here. Too many rappers doing the same exact thing other people have been doing for years.
What projects do you have out?
I've been doing a lot of experimenting. And pretty much just working on Gambino's new album. I did a Jay-Z remix album a while back, and Gam's first album. But that's all kinda old now.
Where can people get em?
That remix album I did is on www.DatPiff.com titled "Jay-Z - The Hov Project".
Do you have any projects coming out soon?
I did 14/16 tracks on Gambino's new album, Murder's Martyr. That's coming at the end of the month I believe. And I'm trying to finishing up this instrumental EP soon, sampling only psychadelic rock. Mostly late 60's shit.
Are you open to working with people?
Yeah, I'm definitely into working with people. As long as they take what they do serious. I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist. And if they're not garbage of course haha.
What albums do you have on rotation as of recently?
Total Life Forever by Foals, Omni by Minus the Bear, Kush & Orange Juice by Wiz Khalifa, The Cleveland Show by Chip tha Ripper, Contra by Vampire Weekend, Gorilla Manor by Local Natives, Congratulations by MGMT. Not much Hip Hop for me.
What do you think of the music nowadays and where do you get your music you listen to?
Music has seen better days. But there's still plenty of great music out there. It's up to all of us to find it, spread it, and make sure it's heard. Where do I get my music? Mostly Pitchfork, Nah Right, and here at The Mad Bloggers, of course.
Last but not least, how did you come up with your name? Where should I say you "rep" and with who, it not solo?
I came up with my name from "Hypnotize" by Biggie. He started the song off with "Ha! Sicker than your average." But shortening that to Sav sounds dumb. So it turned into "more than average" to Mav, then mavbeatz. I didn't get it from Top Gun, contrary to popular belief. I usually just say Connecticut. But New Haven. Dolo.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Chris Webby
Saw this cat perform once and realized he had a fan base already chanting his choruses with him. Looked like he had most of his female fan base on stage too. Wild cat. Haha. Dude freestyles too so if you catch yourself in a cipher with him, don't underestimate.
Hailing from the suburbs of Connecticut, he's got a style that I don't hear from anyone else around this state. Definitely a good thing. Checked out his mixtape "Teenage Mutant Ninja Rapper" he got on DatPiff.com. I got some tracks on repeat. Pretty interesting. What's more interesting is his self-written bio on MySpace (I think it's self-written.) Still, hilarious either way. Check out these tracks by dude. See what you think.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Political Animals - "Wannabe MCs"
Yet another set out of Connecticut helping continue the journey of finding Hip-Hop in places you wouldn't normally look being done by heads you wouldn't give two thoughts about. Definitely a track I'm feeling. They'll be performing at Toad's Place May 20th. Check them out and check this track.
Off Political Animals' MySpace:
POLITICAL “of or relating to your views about social relationships involving authority or power; "political opinions"
ANIMALS “Living beings which can feel things and move freely”
Remember when hip-hop had meaning and substance? When hip-hop was political, thought provoking, and a party all at the same time? Some may feel the genre has lost it’s touch, some even consider the genre “dead.” Hip-hop isn’t dead, it just needed a revival, and that revival is known as POLITICAL ANIMALS. Stampeding their way out of New Haven, CT the group is composed of Sotorios Fedeli on vocals, Jen Harper on bass, and Trenton Wright on drums.
Covering a wide range of topics, POLITICAL ANIMALS make sure their music can be enjoyed by any and every fan of hip-hop. “Wannabe MCs,” is a song which calls out all the artists who follow the latest trends rather than their heart. The tribute song to the Hip-Hop artists who came before them.
In an era where the majority of hip hop artists “press play” and hit the stage, POLITICAL ANIMALS stand out by bringing out the raw sound of hip-hop with a completely live sound. No pre-recorded music, no background beats, just pure Hip-Hop. Laced with funk grooves, break beats, the power of rock, and classic Hip-Hop, their sound is unlike anything you‘ve heard before.
Currently recording their 5 song debut EP for BeazWax records with hip-hop artist/producer Jack Beazly, be prepared for the POLITICAL ANIMAL stampede. POLITICAL ANIMALS will be sure to be playing in your town sooner than you think, because when the animals come through they turn the party into a zoo. This is more than music this is a movement.
“It’s just that animal mentality to turn a dream into reality.”

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Cee Reed - "King of Dragonmen"
We're not done with our search here in the state of Connecticut. Here, I bring you an MC by the name of Cee Reed out of Danbury, CT. He's been putting in work for some time now and maybe you need to hear it. This track is titled "King of Dragonmen" off his latest album Fight or Flight. Check it out.
In the late 90's CEE took a stab at production, picking up tips from long time friends Stroe, Dirt E Dutch and UVJT. CEE also gained knowledge in the background areas of music. Interning at local record label and getting a certification in Live and Studio Engineering. 2003 CEE REED created Northeast Abilities, which went on to develop a local scene for underground Hip Hop. 5 years as a solo artist CEE REED has released 3 albums and has appeared on several mix cds. Steady on the grind to get his name out CEE REED has a great start. Featured in the New York Times, opening for acts De La Soul, Lupe Fiasco C-Rayz Walz, J-Live, One B Lo, Ok Go, Louis Logic, and Troublemakers to name a few.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: OnCue "Crashing Down"
I've known OnCue for a minute. I have some some 100 plus tracks of his in my iTunes library, some of which were never officially on projects. He's grown a lot as an emcee. He stays working on his music and his concepts are well thought out. Dude did a mixtape called "Cueyfornication" that he dropped last summer over all Red Hot Chili Pepper tracks. It was insane. Earlier today he leaked the first joint off "Cuey Sings the Blues", presented by 2DopeBoyz, Mick Boogie, Terry Urban and Christopher Truth. The young dude is going places and continues to push the boundries with his music. While the Connecticut emcee is in NY for school, I had to include him in the Connecticut installment of The Journey to Hip-Hop. Look out for "Cuey Sings the Blues" dropping at some point in July. Check out the homie Plus out of Stamford, CT. I forget how I met him but I think it was from a mutual friend that I may have featured on here. Dude hit me up after I told him about the "Journey" we were about to go on. He couldn't wait to be a part of it. Personally, I'm having fun with this. I heard some tracks off his latest album "The Turning Point", which he has written, produced and mixed all himself, and if I know our viewers like I think I do, you're gonna like this. Plus has opened up for Snoop Dogg in Hartford, CT, to House of Pain and La Coka Nostra in Massachusetts to Bone Thugs N' Harmony and Mo Thugs in Florida. The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Sketch Tha Cataclysm - "Virginia Slim featuring Seme Rock"
Here's another Waterbury, CT native and Antfarm Affiliate that's been holding it down for Hip-Hop from here in Connecticut to brief stints in Minnesota and elsewhere. Sketch Tha Cataclysm is a talented MC. Separates himself from a lot of other artists I know musically and taught himself a lot of ins and outs in recording and mixing throughout the years, from what he's told me in conversations. Definitely a motivated go-getter. Guy doesn't sit still. Don't believe me? Check the shows he performs in. You will most likely catch him without his shoes, a staple of his. Very energetic dude. Haha. Anyways, check out this track he hooked me up with for the "Journey" featuring a vocally gifted beat boxer by the name of Seme Rock.
This joint is going to be on the compilation "The Set Off" my boy Botzy out of Minneapolis is putting out. It features production from me, old school panning and Seme Rock on the vocal cuts.
Enjoy.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: The Rising Sun Quest
This Waterbury, Connecticut MC wasn't planned for today's post but since I caught this off his feed, I felt the need to share considering how I feel about the radio and the fact that they supposedly played this joint multiple times already. I wonder how many MCs/Rappers did the same and if they did better.....lyrically?!
So on Wednesday 5/5/10, I happened to be listening to Hot 93.7 cause they were playing that Jay-Z and Eminem track "Renegade", which is one of my favorites. After the track, the DJs were talking about Eminem representing on that track with lyrics and that artists nowadays don't focus enough on lyrics.
They then said that they had a beat available and if any local artists thought they could deliver lyrics over them, to e-mail Hot 93.7 and they would then send out the beat so the artists could get in the studio and lay down some verses and send it back. (That was a run on sentence.)
So of course, I did what was necessary to get the beat and went into the studio around 9:00pm by myself to get down to business. I stayed up till about 2:00am recording myself, running back and fourth from the track recorder to the booth. I recorded an old verse and one that I had just written earlier that day. I also laid down a hook which was just basically a chant that I do at my live shows. I did the best I could with the mixdown and sent it back to them that night. I didn't want to waste any time so I didn't sweat the fact that I wasn't 100% on the mix. I wasn't sure what they planned on doing with the track and thought they might at least give me a shout out on the air.
Well as it turns out, they played the track on the air around 12:30pm during the Mid Day Workout, I think. I totally missed it but a lot of people hit me up telling me they heard it and showed me and my city of Waterbury support throughout the day. Even the afternoon DJs talked about it, apparently.
Anyway, I wanna share the track with y'all but I haven't heard back from the station on whether it was cool to do that since it's their beat. So I can't give it to y'all for free download like I wanted to but at least you can hear it.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: The Protege (of Phenetiks)
The Protege was born and raised in Waterbury, Connecticut. I grew up in Waterbury. Spent most of my childhood and a portion of my adult life there. Oddly enough though, the first time I caught any music from The Protege was by way of his "No Pressure" video a few weeks back. The visuals caught me and his flow sealed the deal. I wanted to hear more of his stuff. The dude is dope. Check these cuts from the Connecticut emcee!

These guys I've seen perform and met a bunch of times and they're good dudes. Educated, Hip-Hop loving MCs that hosts Enter The Cipher every 3rd Friday at Cousin Larry's in Danbury, CT, a staple for that event as much as this track we got for you here. Not your ordinary set of MCs from the name of their group (d_Cyphernauts), to their individual names (Othello & Nemesis Alpha), to their performances on stage. Definitely should check them out. The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Duece Bug
I hope you're enjoying the Connecticut installment of The Journey to Hip-Hop series. Much like the Milwaukee installment, I'm being introduced to a lot of different heads that I hadn't heard of before. It's dope.
Check out Duece Bug, the Norwalk, Connecticut emcee. The dude has opened for Method Man and Redman, Foxy Brown, Ghostface, Wale, House of Pain and a few others. He's got tracks with Cappadonna, Cory Gunz, Vast Aire of Cannibal Ox and more. His album, "fuck.duece.bug" drops in June. But enough of the co-signs and dope emcees he's worked with, the dude's music speaks for itself. Check it.

The Journey to Hip-Hop ... Connecticut: Expertiz - "Machinery"
Expertiz, out of Stratford, CT, hit me up with this track "Machinery" off his album Disrupting Nature's Balance which was released March 3rd of this year. He heard we were doing a special project for local artists in the state of Connecticut and wanted to be a part of it. Got it, listened, liked. So now I want you to check it out...
Balance, depth and intensity are at the core of the debut release from Expertiz, Disrupting Nature’s Balance. The 22 tracks move effortlessly throughout, each standing on it’s own as a separate pieces of a complex poetic puzzle. These ideas and concepts are his alone and shun the languid conventions of “radio” hip-hop. Expertiz wears his heart on his sleeve while lacing paragraphs littered with density throughout the project. Whether spitting fire like that found on “Let’s Be Clear” questioning Darwinism as found on “Weave Through Worlds” or looking within himself to find answers such as “Before Life Concludes”, the album has something for all avid listeners of classic hip-hop. With production by some of Connecticut’s finest producers, including Deto-22 Dirt E. Dutch, and Defnyshn, the music serves as a perfect compliment to the array of lyrics shown by the host emcee. Guest appearances include Hawl Digg of Workforce, Roc Doogie of Phenetiks, The Rising Sun Quest and Breez Evahflowin.
