Yes, I fell for it. Hook, line and sinker all in one. The Flipmode Squad was damn near the only thing (next to Wu-Tang) that I was checking for. Probably damn near the best dynasty skillwise, Flipmode Squad seemed to have all of it in spades: the dope yet insane rhymer in Busta Rhymes, the certified hypeman who could actually rap decent in Spliff Star, the dark voiced and epic sounding Lord Have Mercy, Roc Marciano who was definitely a great no-frills emcee, and Rampage the Last Boyscout, whose rhyming seemed staggered and well spaced out. But then came the self-proclaimed first lady of Flipmode, and none were more excited than me when Rah Digga stepped out for this solo outing.
Maybe it wasn't as well lauded as The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, but in terms of skill and wit, Rah Digga was pretty much the only other mainstream female emcee who matched pound for pound with Lauryn back in those days. Now that may seem like a bold statement and I may alienate a lot of my peers as a result, but you could say that folks like MC Lyte, Rah Digga, and Lauryn Hill were in a large part responsible for some of the dopest new female talent that rap has encountered. Today's Take Three, my column in which I reduce dope albums or otherwise to three cuts and let you, the listener/consumer make your determination, is all about Rah Digga's debut album, Dirty Harriet. Duck Down vs Blacksmith CMJ Showcase will feature performances by Pharoahe Monch, Smif N Wessun & Pete Rock, Jean Grae, 9th Wonder & Buckshot, Sean Price featuring Heltah Skeltah, Skyzoo & !llmind, Team Facelift, Ruste Juxx, Promise, Torae, Strong Arm Steady, and special surprise guests. DJ Evil Dee will be providing the soundtrack throughout the evening. Hot 97's own DJ Peter Rosenberg will be hosting the event.

If you don’t know, you need to get on board. The Noisemakers series hosted by Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg is on point. Noisemakers is a live interview segment that gets up close and personal with the artists. If you are a true Hip Hop head, this is something you need to see and will definitely appreciate. Rosenberg ‘s knowledge of Hip-Hop is uncanny. He knows Hip-Hop inside and out. Definitely evidence that he is a true music man.
I was finally able to catch a live Noisemakers segment. Last night at 92YTribeca Rosenberg hosted a Noisemakers segment and the guest was the legendary Pete Rock. In between, the band Noise (with @DaruJones on the drums) took it to another level and covered his creations live… Horns, drums, keyboard… The whole bit. Last night was a music lover’s dream. Rosenberg and Pete Rock took me back to a time when music was eargasmic. And the fact that they were not only talking about the songs and beats but playing them as they came up in conversation was CRAZY!!! “Adore”, “Fakin’ Jacks”, “Soul Survivor”, “T.R.O.Y.”, “Down With The Kings”, “Skins” Whaaaaaaaat?? It put you back in that time and I swear, musically, it made me want to go back.
Pete Rock went from where he started, what he did in between and what he is doing now. Listening to the people he worked with, how he works and what he’s worked on is just incredible. His story is amazing and I think the way Rosenberg had him tell it made it even more interesting.
The best part was hearing that Pete Rock has his hands in all kinds of projects. Nas, Kanye (yes y’all.. He was summoned to Hawaii to creatively assist Kanye), Smif and Wesson, Sadat X, Camp Lo (80 Blocks from Tiffany’s)… Just to name a few. And he made it known that he wants to work with Eminem and Jay. It doesn’t make sense for me to tell you anymore, here is the whole segment.
