What I'm Watching....Mos Def - History featuring Talib Kweli

Two of the illest MCs in the game get together for the umpteenth time to hit you with a track off Mos Def's Ecstatic album. I always liked black and white videos for some reason. Seems really artistic and mysterious.

Tha Lady Blogga: Hip Hop BET… Really?

Despite my wanting to watch the opening Cavs and Celtics game, my Twitter fam quickly convinced me to watch the BET Hip Hop Awards. I was watching the Tweets and laughing hysterically. Soon I joined the fun.

Let me just say that BET always guarantees disappointment. The over display of Gucci Mane (aka Leather Lips) and Soulja Boy Tell Em (aka Mr. Sharpie Shape Up) was just ridiculous. Every other performance featured those two fools and since this was a “Hip Hop” show, I couldn’t figure out why. It’s not like they are real Hip Hop artists. Hip Flop is more like it. Souljah Boy came out with his Sharpie hairline and at first glance, I thought he was Flava Flav. His marketing team put together a helluva package. He came onto the stage looking uncomfortably “hard and from the hood”. Saggy skinny jeans and a bunch of hollow gold around his neck. He looked terrible. His outfit was definitely influenced by his woman (ahem… Trina). As for the performance well, you already know. I had to listen and rewind the performance a few times to hear what he was saying. He and Gucci Mane need to see a speech therapist because their speaking skills are the worst. Gucci raps like he has a mouth full of marbles … How the hell did he get a record deal sounding like that? I guess that masks his wack-ass lyrics.

And can somebody please direct Jim Jones to the shower ... Mmmmmkay?

Oh and Busta, Canal Street is not the place for Award gear. Perhaps you could pick up an accessory or two but a whole outfit, no bueno.

They did re-birth a lot of artists who we haven’t seen in awhile. Missy Elliot (who had some fabulous hair *makes salon appointment*), the Goodie Mob reunion was great!! Cee-Lo looks like he shrunk though. Snoop was there too looking fabulous with his Dominican blow-out. I hope those young boys had their notepads out because Snoop knows how to do the damn thang. The show opened with Jay-Z (O_o) and Jeezy. And after that, every commercial was Jay-Z inspired (that must have been in the performance contract).

Now here’s where BET messed up. This was a Hip Hop show … Right? Well, in between the commercials was a 3-5 minute piece called "The Cypher" … well that was the best part of the show. They could have just played all of those in a row and I would have been happier than a pig in slop. You had artists old, new, non-English speaking rapping in a group and they were freestyling!!! For minutes at a time, BET actually represented Hip Hop. I am by no means a fan but lyrically, Nicki Minaj gave me something to listen to. She definitely needs to ditch that “Barbie” image and her mechanical voice. At that point, she might gain me as a fan (I said MIGHT!) Joe Buddens held his own as well. Gsan did the damn thing in Portuguese (but it would’ve been better without the sub titles #BETfail). Nipsey Hussle is another one to watch. His lyrics are beastly. He sounds a lil Snoopish but I am sure he’ll break free of that copied image and create his own. The best damn Cypher of the night… Mos Def, Black Thought and Eminem with DJ Premier on the 1 and 2’s. Dammit BET, why weren’t these Cypher’s stage performances? That was a humongous programming fail and this is why I think you folks at BET/EBT have no idea what you are doing.

If you missed last night’s Cyphers, here they are. Enjoy the first enjoyably vision ever on BET…

First Group: Nicki Minaj, Joe Buddens, Crown Royyal, Buckshot. Second Group: Nipsey Hussle, KRS-One, Gsan and Wale. Third Group: Mos Def, Black Thought and Eminem

TELL 'EM WHY YOU MAD: Tha Lady Blogga on Monogamous Relationships ...

Can Rappers/Entertainers have monogamous relationships?

In the wake of relationships crumbling (Usher and Tameka) and multiple baby mama’s surfacing (Weezy, Nivea, Lauren, etc. etc.), E! True Hollywood Story was right on time showing their special on being a “RAPPER’S Wife”.

The show chronicled the wives of five rappers… Mos Def, Paul Wall, Uncle Luke, DMX and Big Pun. Now, I am no Genius but I would think that if you are seriously involved with or married to a “Rapper”, you would have to expect to deal with certain types of situations. Most of the men married women that were with them before they became famous. To them, those women seem to be the most genuine. They are the ones who love them for who they are, before the money and the fame. The most interesting thing is that these women deal with the everyday struggles that most women deal with. Infidelity of their husbands, domestic violence and financial trouble are just a few. One of them though, did not follow suit. Mos Def married a stripper (Hmmm…). Although he loved his wife, he was not comfortable with his position and her lifestyle. We can almost guess how that turned out.

The most successful couples in the game are the ones who embrace their family life and make it a part of their careers. They know who they are and are comfortable with their image. Most rappers get caught up with the image they are trying to sell versus the person they really are. And I think that is where the problem begins. Big Punisher (Big Pun) had a history of domestic violence. It was sad to hear his wife Liza Rios say that he was the “Punisher” for real. And that even though she lost a husband and a friend when he died, that was the best day of her life because the pain stopped. I was a PUN follower from day one. Lyrically, he brought it. Knowing now that was how he got down is disheartening.

Take Weezy for example. His latest song talks about him wanting to, “f@#k every girl in the world”. Apparently that is exactly what he is doing because he has a myriad of baby mama’s surfacing. You can’t be a family man but out in the clubs every night cavorting with chicks, models & bottles and carrying on. It is one thing to network but another to take it to the next level. Most entertainers try to keep their wives/girlfriends out of that flow of their life just for that reason. They want the female attention and that “groupie love”. If that is the way you want to live then cool, stay single. But don’t marry someone or put yourself in a serious relationship with someone and try to still do it. That is a definite FAILED behavior.

Paul Wall’s wife, Crystal Slayton said it best, “If you know I’m his wife and you’re still pushing up on him… Then you’re takin’ a chance on gettin’ your ass whipped.” I definitely co-sign that. Basically Paul and his wife seem to have a good relationship. He has no gripes about admitting he has a good wife by his side and she seems to know and trust her husband to the fullest. He is a family man, goes out and makes the money while she takes care of the children. They have a family tour bus and she and the children travel with him. She devoted herself to supporting her husband and his career and they have been makin’ it work ever since. She is a mother and devoted wife. But don’t get it twisted, she will smack a bitch.

The rap game and the sport’s world birthed the phrases for multiple women’s status in a man’s life. You have the “main chick”, “bottom bitch”, “side chick”, “groupie”, and “jump-off”. The wife is a given, she’s there too. But some men (even ones that are not celebrities) deem it necessary to have a bevy of women to choose from, one for each purpose in their lives.
I have friends who are artists and professional football players. Some are married; others in serious relationships and some are not. I have watched these behaviors play out before my eyes and it is disgusting. The men, even married ones, have no control over themselves. If a fine piece of ass walks by, she will put it out there and they will chase it. And women will give it up all to say they had him. Women are just as trifling. You could be with your husband/boyfriend at an event or a club and the women will STILL do what they can to get at your man. They don’t care about an artist’s/athletes wife or kids. And don’t let him slip up and get her pregnant, $KA-CHING$ is all she thinks about.

It takes a certain woman to be the wife of a rapper/celebrity. A woman is expected to be loyal to her husband, under all circumstances. She has to be secure, balanced, and confident in her position. She is the mother and the father, has to take care of house and family, keep her marriage in order and stay true to herself.

At the end of the day, with all the drama and bullshit, one would have to ask oneself… Is it worth it?

MOS DEF proposes "The Battle in New Orleans"

So I get a message from @OneAndOnlyKema on twitter hitting me up on the info about MOS DEF talking about doing a friendly competition styled battle in New Orleans. According to this YouTube video (shout out to @Knowledgium for posting the link), he was previously recorded candidly and unknowing the video would get out, speaking on a few artists that proclaim that they're the greatest rapper alive. He spoke on one artist in particular. That artist is Jay-Z. His point is that he doesn't see much sense in calling yourself the greatest without really ever having to defend that claim. Especially when a Slick Rick who, quoting Mos Def, is still very alive and well, and Rakim as well. He doesn't like the fact that someone in his circle leaked the video but at the same time, he's not backing out.

It seems that in all honesty, he's just defending some of the pioneers that are still able to put it down on the mic. No beef. And in a friendly competition to showcase these MCs talents, they can get a chance to prove their claim. Personally, I think it's a very, very great idea and would probably do so much good for hip hop. Maybe with the state of music this game is in, some of these artists should consider it. Tell me you wouldn't watch a battle featuring Morgan State vs Grambling for the Battle of the Bands, Kid Capri vs Biz Markie for DJs, Kanye vs Swizz for the Battle of the Beats, the Battle Royal is a 5 man team which he says he'd be a captain for that consist of Black Thought, Jay Electronica, MF Doom, Nas, and Jay-Z could put his team together for a $10 million dollar pot. Why would you turn that down? Unless.........you can't back it up.

Regardless, I should start campaigning to get this event started. Somehow. Someway. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and marking my calendar! You ready? The BOOGIE MAN is! Haha.

Lets Make The Next Krush Groove

If they made Krush Groove today, who would be featured in the flick? The 1985 movie featured heavy weights like Run DMC, The Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, New Edition, Sheila E. and so many other cameos.

Let me throw out a few heads that would be dope in the newer flick … Little Brother, The Roots, Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Meth, Redman, KRS-One and Dead Prez. Maybe even feature cameos from heads like Kanye, Blu, Oddisee, Murs, Pharoahe, and Drake. I’m going to even throw Raheem DeVaughn, Alicia Keys, John Legend and Mary J. in for good measure. The cast possibilities are endless. What are your thoughts? Who would you throw in the mix?

Obviously, a classic is a classic and no need to recreate but how dope would it be to have another legendary hip-hop flick. I think we could use one. Just think of that soundtrack.

Welcome To I.C. Shitty!

Take a good look at the cover of next month's XXL Magazine. I can't stop shaking my f'ing head. "Welcome To Icey City: Da Dirty's New Street Teams Wants It All." Wants what? All the wack rappers' spots left? Wackest rapper awards? What? You tell me. I've heard these clowns rap. I can't hate until I review. I reviewed before. All f'ing set with them. And to think, a rare few of my favorite artists have worked with some of these dude. WHAT??!?! F*ck, maaaaaaan! Still shaking my head. Utter disbelief. These dudes have to floss their probably rented or borrowed jewelry to distract you from how cornballish their skills are. Yeah, I said cornballish. I don't think these rejects deserve an official adjective. Should've been titled "Welcome To I.C. Shitty: Da Dumbest New Weak Team Wants It All." Straight trash.

I can't stand these bums so bad so that I've told friends and acquaintances of mine, if you like any of these dudes on this cover, delete me, remove me, forget me. Because I don't see how I can associate with you if you can find entertainment in their music. And I use the term music loosely. Still......still shaking my head. Wow! Why, XXL? Why? To sell magazines? To get new readers? Subscriptions? Selling your soul? Cause you can't be serious.

"It’s that time of the year again. Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, OJ Da Juiceman and Shawty Lo recently joined forces to pose for XXL’s July Issue - the 2nd Annual Hood to Hood Issue.

The Atlanta cover comes one year after XXL’s 1st Annual Hood to Hood Issue, which featured Miami stars Rick Ross, DJ Khaled, Trina and Flo Rida. In addition to the cover story, the issue includes features on Asher Roth (P.A.), Mos Def (Brooklyn) and Drake (Toronto) and a breakdown of popular hip-hop hometowns." - as written on XXLmag's website.

You're kidding me!!! Same issue also has Asher Roth, Mos Def and Drake??? Those 3 dudes would run circles around these ringtone ass, microwave, no classic creating, here now, gone later today Raggedy Andys. Damn XXL. I mean, you don't have to explain it or answer or defend yourself to me but I am curious as to why. I mean, who am I anyway? No one, really. I'm just a fan of music and real authentic hip hop culture. I'm not really with all that clown ish these dudes come out the studio with. Poisoning the brains of the mindless youths. Sad to see too. They think their music is the hottest thing out. I feel bad for them. Can't be bumping that. If I was 25, I'd still feel too old to purposely look like a fool blasting that mess by day and dancing to it by night. Nah. Arms folded, screw face for me when them puppet DJs play them.

They can brag about all the money they got, cars they drive, jewelry they rock, and so on and so forth. But I better never hear them say they are nice on the mic. Might cause a heart attack then a disagreement and then some furniture moving. And you can tell them O said it. Just saying.
