Michael Jackson, we always knew you...

I was one of the many that represented the MTV Generation. Let me straighten it out for you, when MTV had Adam Curry, and Kurt Loder had the same integrity as Tom Brokaw, was around the same time we had just heard about this weird and life-changing invention called cable. I was fortunate to have it around, since my parents always left me in front of MTV. I got to see it all, the hair-metal pop bands, the synth-pop new wavers, you name it, it was exposed to me since I was an infant. Hip-Hop was born around the same time as I was, though I would later learn that Hip-Hop was born way before me and had a good 6 years of age.

That's neither here nor there. Because there was one video, one that still stands out amongst them all for each decade, whether I had MTV or not. They were all made by one man, this man transcended time and space, with his syrupy good vocals, and his bigger than Jeebus dance moves that we all tried to imitate the next day. He's no longer with us now, as it would be one year since his passing today. That man, people, is Michael Jackson.

Ever since this man came into my life, its been pretty much one where I was fascinated more than when my parents would sit me down and explain the meaning of N.W.A's lyrics from "Straight Outta Compton," or Public Enemy's "By the Time I get to Arizona," it was still all about Mike. So allow me to give you three experiences I had with videos of Mike's.

"Rock With You"

I still remember this when I saw this video. Green lasers abound and Mike standing with a Mic, talking about dancing all night long with that special lady. Why did it trip me out? Well, he was standing alone, glitter sequined suit and signature shoe, letting all the worries get out and letting all the groove seep in. Really, Q-Tip & J-Lo could bite the steez on the green lasers, but Mike made it cool.

"Human Nature"

Without this song, we would lose essential foundations of Nas "It Ain't Hard To Tell," and SWV's "Right Here (Remix)" (you all know the remix was better, don't front.) Those synths and guitars come on in, and then after that you hear it hit, Michael just going off base and becoming one with the beat. At that moment, many things hit; bliss, comfort, contemplation. It made Mike the ethereal genius. He didn't need to let it belt out and risk going off tune, but he didn't have to with such a wise backing track as this.

"Remember The Time"

I still remember where I was when I saw this tune. Magic Johnson, Eddie Murphy and Iman do too. They were on the set shooting this Egyptian themed tale of Mike being the entertaining and cunning court jester trying to make off with Eddie's Nefertiti (Iman). Many videos were considered world premier, but few were as hyped as Mike's. You knew that once MTV mentioned it was gonna be appearing for the first time on MTV, you waited as eagerly as you did the next episode of "Lost," or the newest episode of "Family Guy;" eyes glued to the tube, and once we saw its elaborate set design, the way the song wrapped into the video, we all wanted to disappear into sand like Mike did.

Those my friends are the three moments that made me love Mike that much. He was around, which is what counted, before MTV became soulless, before Large Professor got the idea to flip the same song that Mike sung for one of rap's unsung heroes, and even before we wanted to be cool in the club. Mike was an everyman. If you choose to look past that, and just see the man during his trying time, near death and being preyed upon like a vulture, do as you wish. But there is simply nothing that stands true for us than the Mike we knew and still love to this day.

Rest in peace, Michael Jackson.

Download ... "Man Or The Music" (A Tribute To Michael Jackson)

I woke up on June 26, 2009, early. I was heading up to Boston for 6 weeks for work. I flipped on the television and CNN was still talking about the death of Michael Jackson. It still didn't seem real.

It still doesn't seem real.

I had gone 31 years and he was always a constant in and around my life. I remember lip syncing "Man in the Mirror" at family events. I remember reciting lines from "PYT" to well, pretty young things. I remember the fear that surrounded me while watching "Thriller" in a dark room as a kid (and an adult). MJ's music had meant a lot in my life. He was an entertainer and just a cool person in my eyes.

That morning, as I packed and prepared for my journey, J. Period's "Man Or The Music" (A Tribute To Michael Jackson) popped up. It was like the MJ essentials, filled with classics, rare demos and remixes. It was perfect.

This tribute mix blasted for days and days (and is still played). So, the day before the anniversary of the death of the King of Pop, I share with you again J. Period's "Man Or The Music" (A Tribute To Michael Jackson). So, go get your red jacket with the zippers, white glove, some white socks, dress shoes and high watered pants, and enjoy.

Rest in Peace Michael.

Jay-Z x Michael Jackson

I caught these two tracks off a Jay-Z Blueprint 3 and Michael Jackson hits mashup, CR the Beast Presents: MJ3: "FADE TO JACK" THE RE-FIX. The mixtape is over a month old but these two joints jumped out at me, so I figured I share. Thoughts?

#MusicMonday ... Michael Jackson - "Man in the Mirror"

When I was a kid I would sing this song all the time. While I couldn't sing it very well, I could definitely do my thing when it came to lip syncing the joint and performing for family (you know how it is: "Q come down here and do that Michael Jackson"). This is one of my favorite MJs songs! I think with so much going on in the world, this is a fitting song to share on this Music Monday! I've been saying it for a few months but this video would be dope with an updated version, with scenes of Katrina, September 11th, the Iraq War, Darfur and more. I'm throwing the idea out there, if you do it, hit me with the link when it's complete. Anyway, happy Monday and enjoy!

Method Man & Redman at Toad's Place

Method Man & Redman came through to Toad's Place in CT to perform for the second time together. Got pictures and videos to show you their performance. They certainly give you a show on stage. Crowd was into it the whole entire night. It's what I like all hip hop shows to feel like. Check it out.

Check out the Y.O.U. video. Method Man goes off about rappers and MCs. Lessons in More Hip Hop and Less Swag. Haha.

So, how do you celebrate the late King of Pop's birthday? It's surely not watching the BET Awards again, I'll tell you that! What you do is throw on a white glove, your Thriller jacket and pretend like hell you can do the moonwalk, while you vibe out to MJ hits! And you don't stop till you get enough ... then you rock some more after that. So, with that said, we thought it was only fitting to hit you with this J. Period tribute mix again.

"Gone too Soon" Goodbye Michael ...

The media is relentless. I don't know what they were expecting today with Michael Jackson's memorial service but they seemed surprised at how well organized and classy the event was. The service was moving and memorable.

And as I watch clips over and over throughout the night from places around the world paying tribute to the man who will always be known as the King of Pop (or the greatest entertainer of all time) I am moved. As a father, the words spoken by his daughter Paris touched my heart. And even as much as I am against Al Sharpton on many issues, his words were for the most part inspiring and truly heartfelt (weirdly enough it was the first time I ever felt like Al was a reverend because he brought us to church). From beginning to end it was a very respectable and classy service, that spoke to the man as an artist and the man as a friend and a human being.

In a way I felt like the memorial allowed MJ to reclaim a bit of what the media and others tried to chip away from him over the years, with accusations, rumors and lies. "Maybe now Michael, they will leave u alone..." his brother spoke from the stage. Sadly though, I doubt it will happen as the exclusive hungry media continues to examine the details of his untimely death and follow what will happen to his children in the coming weeks, months and probably even years. They're vultures. But I still think MJ was honored in a way that they will never be able to take away. He was honored as a King.

A friend sent this video link over to me. I'm not sure if it's legit or not but I thought that it was well put together and allegedly could have been a part of the BET Awards show (what a travesty that event was in it's entirety and clips). I don't normally post things I can't confirm (because we aren't TMZ) but again I thought that it was a pretty dope video.

So whether legit or not, we post this video as a respectful tribute to MJ.

I still can't believe the man is gone. Michael was simply an amazing artist and person and his music was a cornerstone growing up. As if he could hear me, I yell out "I LOVE YOU MICHAEL"

"In Our Darkest Hour

In My Deepest Despair

Will You Still Care?

Will You Be There?

In My Trials

And My Tribulations

Through Our Doubts

And Frustrations

In My Violence

In My Turbulence

Through My Fear

And My Confessions

In My Anguish And My Pain

Through My Joy And My Sorrow

In The Promise Of Another Tomorrow

I'll Never Let You Part

For You're Always In My Heart."

Tha Lady Blogga Asks...Where's Hip Hop?

Given the recent events in the music industry, we can't help but realize that the hip-hop culture is on a rapid downward spiral. We lost the King of Pop, Vibe magazine folded, XXL featured a cover full of shiny suit rappers. What the hell is going on with hip-hop? It needs to be revived and quickly. We have been bombarded with parties and bullshit, bling and swag, titties and asses (thanks, Drake), but no talent. Where did it all go?

Pandora Internet radio has become a necessity in my Blackberry. While mainstream radio caters to the artists that pay the most for spins per day, Pandora gives you a mix of stuff you want to hear. I can't stand listening to mainstream radio anymore. Every hour, the line-up is the same...and it's a shitty line-up at that.

So, here I am jammin' to my Pandora "Nas" station, listening to Nas, Jay-Z, Tupac and then it plays Ma$e? WTF is this? Ma$e? Where did this come from? How does he fit in here? He doesn't and that's the problem. I can't deal with the shiny suit rapper. I can't do it. So then I got to thinking, where did hip-hop go wrong? When did we lose it to talentless gimmick promoters with expensive cars? First I thought it was Puffy and his shiny suit movement. But then what about Hammer? And who the hell gave Vanilla Ice a record deal?

The new age of rappers is coming equipped with everything but talent. I mean, it's one thing to have a sales pitch or a certain image but you have to have talent to back it up. I am not even knocking the use of auto-tune. I was rocking to "Computer Love" and it was all good. If artists were saying something worth listening to, it wouldn't matter if it was auto-tuned or not. Having to listen to the likes of Soulja Boy, Hurricane Chris, New Boyz and other talentless "Hip-Hop" acts makes it difficult for the real Hip-Hop acts to shine through. In my opinion, their music isn't considered "Hip-Hop", it's just noise. Soulja Boy will never live down the fact that he lyrically compared himself to Nas! Nas is a rapper, Soulja Boy is not. So for him to compare himself to a lyricist such as Nas, he deserves to be smacked.

Not for nothing, I think Drake is lyrically inclined and has potential to be something special, but he is allowing himself to be pushed in that bullshit artist direction and that isn't a good move. He is going to lose a lot of fans because of that. He really needs to think about staying true to himself and his talent and not following behind the likes of Kanye West. Honestly I think Kanye just wanted to kill his competition a little bit so he created that video to put Drake on hold for a second. Drake created a buzz without tits, ass and jewels. He can continue to make moves sans that crap in his act.

We have always had underground rappers. The underground movement in the Hip-Hop culture was real serious at one time but now all the real Hip-Hop artists are being pushed into that category. We need to start moving in a direction to bring back Hip-Hop as we knew it. Supporting bullshit music is a problem. We have to start supporting real music and stop helping these "lucky" mediocre artists who knew the right people get ahead. We have new rappers emerging with ridiculous talent and they deserve to be heard on a mainstream level. How awesome would it be to turn on the radio and hear tracks from Diamond District, or Tanya Morgan, some Marco Polo & Torae, or how about "Queens' Anthem"? That would be a revitalizing breath of fresh air. I wouldn't have to cringe every time I turned on the radio or kill my Blackberry battery listening to my Pandora Internet radio.

We need to bring it back and it's going to take a lot of work, but...it can be done.

Tha Lady Blogga Remembers MJ ...

Waking up this morning felt weird. I was hoping that’s the news wasn’t true. But it was. Michael Jackson was really dead…

I was trying to figure out what to say. How to address this in a blog but the words couldn’t come. Even though I did not know him personally, it saddened me to tears. Michael was one of those people who were supposed to be immortal. He would be around making music forever. So this is almost surreal.

I remember being a little girl and having the craziest crush on Michael. My wall plastered with posters. I had all kinds of Michael Jackson paraphernalia. Being that my dad was a DJ, I was lucky enough to have his music on vinyl. And my dad had two copies of everything so I would sometimes get in trouble for taking his second record. If I wasn’t dancing in the living room, I was sitting and staring at the album cover and imagining…

Michael’s music was incredible. From a little boy, he sang from the heart; always genuine, always original. Many of the artists out today wanted to be him, at some point. A lot of people sampled his songs and modeled his style but nobody could do it like him. And nobody ever will.

The radio never sounded better. It is unfortunate that it took the death of an icon for us to hear quality music on the radio. I sincerely hope that artists sit back and take a good look at their music. They need to take a good look at the fact that their work ethic sucks, their level of creativity is nil and their focus on what good music is needs to be examined. Some people need a serious adjustment on the garbage they create and step their game up.

It is a shame that Michael died in the public eye, which is what he hated the most about show business. Instead of people paying homage to his great artistic works, the news and other media are trying to still, break him down. I hope that he can finally rest in peace. I know heaven is rockin’ right now!! Most of our greats are up there … R.I.P. Michael Jackson

Real Talk: Remembering The King of Pop

Real talk for just a moment. Let's celebrate life.

Let the allegations and the Jacko talk fall back and let us appreciate the artist. Just for a real moment don't focus on the mostly gossip and rumor based nonsense of Michael Jackson's life and let's talk about and remember an INCREDIBLE artist with an extraordinary gift.

His music entertained us. His rise moved us. He was the King of Pop. This one man, his dance moves, his videos and his musical catalogue have impacted many different generations. There are those that grew up with Motown's Jackson 5 and then those that knew the amazing solo career of Michael Jackson.

The Internet and television - basically every media source have been on fire and have almost come to a halt over Michael Jackson. I grew up during a time that a Michael Jackson video world premier was a huge event. They covered his video like an Obama news conference on every major network. It was huge. You sat in your living room around a television and waited for the King of Pop's newest offering to the world to premier during prime time.

He was huge. He was the King of mini-series type music videos. I think most people can remember where they were when they saw Thriller for the first time. I'll bet that those same people are still a little afraid of the video to this day. How many of us have pulled a line from Billy Jean? You remembered how crazy the Remember The Time video was with Eddie Murphy and Magic Johnson. Who has world renowned movie directors directing their music videos? Yeah, Michael Jackson.

His collaborations go on and on and on. His career stretches decades. What were you doing when you were 10 years old?

He provided REAL dance moves. Remember the moonwalk? Remember that move he pulled in the Smooth Criminal video? I bet there are folks digging in their closet for their thriller jacket and searching for their single glove right now! Folks might be buying out stores for high-water pants, white socks and dress shoes right now. Be real.

Michael Jackson was and is an icon. Regardless of what has happened to the man in recent years in his personal life, his music is legendary and every rapper and singer deep down (and some on the surface) want to be him in some regards.

Let us appreciate the music that he gave to the world. Let us remember the King of Pop and his ability to make grown people cry and men and women alike faint while he performed.

The man was legendary and should be respected and appreciated. If you have MJ jokes or nonsense, save it. He dealt with enough of it in life, do we need to disrespect him in death? Let's celebrate and be positive. This goes for major networks and individuals.

Like my man O said, every radio station everywhere should be playing nothing but Michael Jackson for the whole weekend. He deserves that much.

It's just real talk.

A few words from "O":
It was an incredibly sad day in this world the day they announced Michael Jackson's passing. I can't believe how affected I get when I hear his music now. Having to fight the lump in my throat knowing he is forever gone from us and this world. I feel at least blessed to have grown up during the great part of his career. So many classics that will forever be remembered. I may have been younger but I still knew and felt his music to be greater than anyone can or will ever create. It's hard for me to talk about it now considering how powerful his music is and knowing he's no longer here to create more of that magic. Through out his ups and downs, he has given the world more than anyone I can even imagine. Michael did so much through his music. I hope God has open his gates in heaven for him and is waiting with open arms. He can suffer no longer. May his legend live on eternally through us and through his music.
