A little funk, a little R&B, a lot of goodness here. New joint from one of G.O.O.D. Music's producers and writers, Benny Cassette, featuring BJ The Chicago Kid. Check it.
Benny Cassette’s upcoming EP, Apocalypse, will be released this fall and will feature Stacy Barthe, BJ The Chicago Kid, Pell and Isaiah Rashad.
Bonus: Benny Cassette’s official remix of John Legend’s “You And I”.
I'm not gonna front and say I didn't sleep on BJ The Chicago Kid. Even after hearing him on hook after hook, I still didn't have his project. But then one day, I was like, shit, I just need to get that. I did. After running through it for the first time, I was kind of pissed I slept on it for so long. Pineapple Now-Laters is one of the strongest overall projects released this year and definitely one of the best R&B/Soul joints. If you aren't up on it, don't make the mistake I did and sleep any longer. Anyway, our good friend Miss Special caught up with BJ down at A3C. Peep their interview up top.
While at A3C I got to chat with BJ The Chicago Kid again about his upcoming collaborations and album on Motown Records. He says that a Jill Scott collaboration will happen and describes what it will be like. He also says that a Jojo song is in the works they just both need to find the right time and the right vibe. He also speaks about an upcoming track with Chuck Inglish that he's waiting for Chuck to release but says it's so hot he might have to steal it if it's not released soon enough. He also speaks about opening up for Anthony Hamilton and reminisces about hearing Hamilton's album for the first time. Additionally, he talks about the highlight of his live show and working on tracks to release before his Motown Records album.
I chop it up a lot with Miss Special behind the scenes. She's a talented woman with a lot of passion for music. I dig what she does and support as much as I can. A few weeks back she hit SXSW with the rest of the music world and snagged up a couple of interviews with some dope folks. As she uploads them, we'll be posting them. Enjoy.
I was finally able to interview BJ The Chicago Kid before his performance at The Vibe House during SXSW. We spoke about working with Thurz, Pac Div, Fly.Union, a bunch of unreleased tracks with Fly.Union, possibly doing a duet with Kay Cola and his upcoming duets with Joi Starr, Lola, Treasure Davis, etc. We also spoke about the story behind the title "Pineapple Now-Laters", including the J. Dilla influence, bringing soulful r&b back, the next video from the album from Paris and when to expect it. In addition we spoke about the success of the album, the loss of his friend, the creative process when working with Kendrick Lamar and what's next for him.
While at SXSW, I was introduced to the lovely Liza Garza at the WhutUpDoe “Set It Off” showcase. After the showcase, I had the pleasure of interviewing her. We spoke about her appearance on Def Poetry Jam, her favorite hip-hop artists and her first album “BloomfulBeautiful”. We also spoke about her next album, the story behind her latest song “Gather Round”, writing poems versus writing songs, her jewelry line and more.
