"Home Is Where The Art Is" drops September 4th on Mello Music Group. The album is executive produced by fellow MMG artist Oddisee, adding an extra layer of talent and focus to the project that also features additional production from M-Phazes and Eric Lau among others.
That right there is enough to definitely peep the album when it drops. This track is good music from the DMV emcee that has been doing it for the last 10 years.

AWKWORD "Throw Away The Key (No More Prisons)"
Not only is this a dope track from AWKWORD, but it's an important one too. Taking on the system, one verse at a time. Turn it up! Chea!
"Appearing on AWKWORD's DJBooth-sponsored 100% for-charity global Hip Hop project, World View, and with co-signs from The Prison Policy Initiative and The Sentencing Project, the activist emcee's newest release "Throw Away The Key (No More Prisons)" is his first overtly political record since "Mr. President (The Wisconsin Song)" with Y-Love 16 months ago. The catchy, anthemic single, produced by Toronto's L.Ment, is at once an attack on racism, inequality and the (in)justice system in America and a tribute to the people who live a life in constant defense mode -- from the police, from the courts, from the Man."

Interview: Miss Special x Chaundon
Miss Special met up with Chaundon at the YC The Cynic & Yuri Beats release party for "Good Morning, Midnight" to talk about his past and future projects.
They spoke about his Golden Era Mondays, including the banging "Can't Pretend" and its producer H. Dizzy Flow. They also spoke about him flying to California to work with Jansport J on a future full project.
He talked about feeling disconnected from his records because he had to do some much background work, but felt a certain freedom with "The Jammington" He says that the idea behind the cover art for "The Jammington" was to show that women do listen to his music.
"I used to record his older brother back in the day and YC used to come to the studio. At the time I didn't know it was him. I didn't know that a great emcee was about to happen 7, 8 years later. After I heard his first mixtape, that I actually put out on my website. I just believed in him..I told every blog I knew that they had to check it out" he tells about YC The Cynic when speaking about how he chose the features on "The Jammington".
He also mentions how great he would A&R for Nas.
His next album "The Freshington" with producer Kuddie Fresh is expected in March or April of 2013 and Chaundon has nothing short of amazing to say about it. He proclaims that with this album he will be leaving the underground. "Kuddie Fresh really gave me another tax bracket sound. I'm a shiny suit rapper! I'm not an underground rapper, I'm not a book bagger, I'm sorry! I have book bagger tendencies with the lyrics but I'm a shiny suit rapper. Do you not listen to the lyrics?" He calls himself " the dope answer for the Drake's of the world" by giving you that commercial sound but with raw rhymes.
"I'm talking about it like I'm listening to someone else's record. This is how I felt when I first heard "Illmatic" and "Ready To Die" and "Reasonable Doubt", this is that feeling.. This is how I felt when I did "The Jammington" and I was right."
Following "The Freshington" he plans on releasing "The Dopington" with producers Family Biz Entertainment. "If you think 'The Freshington is gonna be on the radio, you're gonna hate me by the time 'The Dopington' comes out!"

Alicia Keys - "New Day"
A "New Day" for a new song by the incomparable and very talented Alicia Keys. Track seems like a change from what she usually busts out with when she's about to drop a new album. 14KT, Oddisee, and Olivier Daysoul. You can't be mad at the dopeness that fills this track. I played this about 4 times before I could even pause long enough to post this joint. Damn.
This is the first creation from the upcoming 4 track EP, a song originally titled "One 4 Black", which rhyming adept Oddisee re-envisioned with a little help on the hook from the mellifluous Olivier Daysoul. The message is as straightforward as the new title "High Horse". Enjoy!

Capital Ode "All I Need"
"So many times we get wrapped up in our own selfish desires and we forget the things that are truly important. Often times, if we took the time to look around, we'd find that most of these things are already present in our lives. This song was written in 2009 (and has been remade a million times lol) when I really sat down and took the time to think about what was truly important to me. It was a humbling experience and produced the song I present to you now. I'll be fine and you will too." -Capital Ode

Jinesis "DooWah"
I'll let Jinesis intro this one.
When it comes to beatmakers, we share a common chord and that's digging. Nothing feels better than coming across a rare record that you heard flipped. There's an unspoken challenge to flip it differently. Even the artwork speaks to you. So as I started chopping this Teddy Pendergrass (Easy, Easy, Got to Take It Easy) sample, I had that nagging suspicion that someone had flipped this sample already, but I couldn't pinpoint who. So after I flip the sample I went on whosampled.com to find out who had used it and it turns out Little Brother used it for "Not Enough ft. Darien Brockington" and Cali Agents used for "Close to Cash". I gave both records a listen, and they both did a great job but I feel I flip it better, as any beatmaker would say. Take a listen to my version, tell me what your thoughts are! Thank you, Enjoy -Jinesis.

Miss Special caught up with YC The Cynic and Yuri Beats at the release party for their project “Good Morning, Midnight”.(via @MiSS1SPECiAL)
The two gave hilariously different versions of how they met and decided to work together. "I was walking the desert and the moment I thought there was no human life form I came across Yuri Beats and it was the most amazing experience ever because he had water and I was like wow, we should make music" says YC The Cynic. Yuri Beats followed up by telling a slightly different version about how he saw YC The Cynic perform at South Paw, to which YC The Cynic responds "the stories have to match bro".
The two remarked on a comment made that their project was "like Drake, Kanye and The Pharcyde had a baby. Then YC raised it and released an album."
The two also spoke about their upcoming plans including Yuri Beats working on Nitty Scott MC's "Boombox Diaries Volume 1", as well as, Max Burgundy and eXquire and YC The Cynic's debut album "GNK".

EVENT: Tillman's Select Presents Top Dolla Raz (7/24/12)
TMB Recap: The 2012 Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival
For the last four summers OC and I have been meeting up at the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival to enjoy great music, good food and networking with dope people. He comes from Connecticut and I troop down from Upstate New York. It's become a tradition of sorts. One that we both look forward to.
Each year as we've gotten the feel for the festival, our camera arsenal has also grown (well, OC's has) and so we're able to expand our coverage of the event. This year we headed out to Brooklyn with three photographers (myself, OC and 3feetofanger) on a mission. Eight hours. 500 pictures. These are some of our best shots.
Before we get to the pics, I wanted to sum up the event in two categories, highlights and low-lights.
Highlights:
- Seeing TMB favorites Clear Soul Forces, Chuuwee and Charmingly Ghetto rock the BHF stage with ScienZe and Dutch Rebelle.
- Witnessing live A Tribe Called Quest and Leaders of The New School on the same stage for the first time in decades.
- Slick Rick, Smif-n-Wessun and others rocking with Busta Rhymes, one of the greatest performers of our time, alongside his longtime hypeman Spliff Star.
- Tickets for this year's final day jumped from $15 to $30, which turned off some folks. Still an affordable event considering the headliner and his guest but something I heard a lot of negativity about.
- Even with a higher ticket price, Saturday's show didn't have nearly the amount of performances as they've had in previous years, which led to too much downtime in between sets and prior to Busta Rhymes finally taking the stage.
- The folks at Brooklyn Bodega, who run the event, granted us press passes. That was dope. But we didn't realize those passes provided limited access to the press pit in front of the stage once the headliner hit the stage. So we ultimately got booted because that area suddenly became only accessible to all access badge holders. This could have reduced the quality of our pics. Good thing we're nice like that though and worked it out. Ha! But yeah, this info wasn't communicated to us and that was kind of lame.
All and all, it was a cool event. Not nearly as great as previous years overall. But as I mentioned, there were a gang of dope moments, many we caught on camera. Peep the visuals after the jump.

What I'm Watching: @the_17th "My Drug"
Although grim, The 17th brilliantly executes the video for his first major song "My Drug," which gives an eye-opening look into the struggles and dangers of drug addiction. What I also find fascinating, is that if you listen closely to the lyrics, "My Drug" doubly serves as a representation of an extremely toxic relationship. All too often, we hear stories about friends and/or family in situations that are detrimental to their mental health, but because that's all they know, they continue to stay involved and it becomes some sort of an addiction. With that being said, The 17th has taken steps to help those in need. His song is currently being featured as an aid for a music therapy class at a local drug rehabilitation facility in his home town. Because both the song and video have been so well received, it is his hope to get "My Drug" into rehab facilities across the country. I congratulate him in his effort because as many of us understand, whether from personal experience or from people we know, drug addiction is a very real thing, and to fix the ever growing problem, it starts at home.
To stay up-to-date with The 17th, you can follow him at twitter.com/the_17th (he's a really nice guy, so hit him up) and you can hear "My Drug" and his latest track "Push" in rotation at Radio 104.1 FM. The 17th is also working on his debut EP Free Music set for release next month, but in the meantime, enjoy the video.

Natasha Ramos: A Day In Her Journey, episodes 1-3
There's a business side and there's a human side to every artist. Today, we get to see the very human side of Natasha Ramos. Sounding more amazing than ever, we get to see in episode 1 the time she spends in the studio working hard. If you're an artist, producer, engineer or someone familiar with the music industry, you know the time that's spent in the lab perfecting the craft. Though in episode 2, we get to see the goof in Natasha, as well as the crazy, silly studio shenanigans. In episode 2, we get an intimate but brief look into Natasha's familial and personal life. And you know the girl is dope because she plays Michael Jackson: The Experience on the Wii. You can't beat that kind of awesome. Ha! So if you're a fan of Natasha Ramos (which you should already be), check out her "A Day In Her Journey" series on YouTube below. Enjoy.

@KirbyLauryen's A Song A Day: Day 195
As a woman, I can completely identify with Kirby's latest track, "Save Him." What I love most about this song is the progression of reality in the lyrics. At the beginning, the thought of being able to save a man is a tangible one, but towards the end, the realization sets in of how impossible a feat saving him is. Nothing short of brilliant honesty here. Enjoy.

D/Will & Dominique Larue drop off their new project diem. I'm definitely digging the vibe laid out by the Ohio emcee and Missouri producer. Following their 2010 EP carpe., the duo continue to build on their musical chemistry to deliver a cohesive and quality project. No skips. Hit play and enjoy. Chea!
