THE BRIEFING: Was it About Race?

We caught this story a few days ago. Thought it was crazy. One of our blog followers hit us up with his thoughts on the situation. Some may agree or disagree with his his perspective of the situation. We thought that we would present both sides.

So, to bring you up to speed as reported in the NY Times …

An off-duty rookie cop chasing a suspected car thief in East Harlem with his gun drawn was shot and killed Thursday night when an officer mistook him for a criminal.

"Police! Stop! Drop it!" cops from the 25th Precinct shouted at Omar Edwards, 25.

As he started to turn toward him - the gun still in his hand - an officer opened fire, sources said.

The officer involved in the shooting is white, Edwards is black and had no visible NYPD identification on him, sources said. It was unclear if Edwards identified himself.

"This is always a black cop's fear, that he'd be mistaken for a [suspect]," a source said.
His father couldn't fathom how such a fatal mistake could happen.

"If a police officer sees someone with a gun, you don't just fire without asking questions or trying to apprehend the person," said Ricardo Edwards, 72. "If the person was firing at a police officer, I understand."

NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Edwards, who had been on the force less than two years and worked out of a Manhattan housing unit, had left work about 10:30 p.m.

He was in street clothes as he walked toward his car parked about a block away on Second Ave. between E. 124th and E. 125th St., where he saw Miguel Goitia rummaging through the vehicle. The driver's side window was busted out.

Edwards grabbed Goitia, who managed to slip out of his sweater and escape Edwards' grip, Kelly said.

Gun drawn, Edwards gave chase.

At the same time, three plainclothes officers in an unmarked car saw Edwards running down the street. The car made a U-turn, and one of the officers, a white cop with more than four years on the job, got out and fired six shots - hitting Edwards twice, once in the left arm and once in the chest, Kelly said.
Edwards did not fire his weapon.

Cops discovered Edwards was one of them when rescue crews cut open his shirt to treat the bleeding and saw a police academy shirt. They then searched his pockets and found his shield, sources said.

So, here is another perspective from one of our blog followers …

Everything is Race, right? I know Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson are going to have a say on this, just as soon as they can get one of their party members to create a speech in which Race is the primary thought.

Any officer, in pursuit of a man being chased by another with a gun drawn would've done what in the essence of saving someone's life? Okay, shooting at the torso was a bit much maybe, but hey, the guy had his gun drawn.

Who's to say he wasn't going to turn around and fire back? I believe the deciding factors in this case are: "identification as a whole".

Did the off duty officer attempt to identify himself after the other officer fired the first shot? Does the city have a protocol for off duty officers drawing their weapons in public? If so, does it require wearing a vest? Yes it is a sad thing, but as an officer (and I am speaking solely from an opinionated civilian point of view) I believe their reaction in this is solely upon the individual and his/her judgment.

As far as race, replay the situation but substitute yourself as the triggerman, then ask yourself, "what would I have done?" The City should be held accountable for Protocol of the off duty officer. This has been a Public Service Announcement brought to you by ÜberJess and I'm out.

We don’t know if race played a factor or not but New York City Cops have been at the eye of the storm of various controversial shootings. It also raises the question are police sometimes too quick on the draw. This entire incident needs to be examined and perhaps can be a continued learning opportunity. Again, we just wanted to present both sides.

What's Next for James?

Imagine: “Sorry LeBron,” says the Kobe puppet, while looking at a moving truck. “I’ll send you post cards from the finals.” I wonder if Nike has this commercial ready to go? Or perhaps they have one where Dwight is evicting LeBron from the house.

R.I.P. LeBron Puppet.

Hey, I’m a LeBron fan and really hoped that this year was his year! Think about it … great season, coach of the year, MVP and the Cavs were moving easily through the playoffs. It all made sense. But Cleveland just didn’t show up during the series against Orlando and definitely didn’t show up in game six. Game six provided the least impressive game for LeBron and had us all yelling out at our television sets "take it to the hole!" Now LeBron and the Cavs will be watching the finals from home. I guess the NBA conspiracy theory went out the window when the final buzzer sounded in the Eastern Conference finals.

And as that final buzzer sounded, the talk of what’s next for King James grew louder and louder. Knicks? Hmmm... New York fans would surely welcome the King and that talk has been long rumored around the way. It’s really early to know what the off-season will hold. The Cavs will definitely try to sign James to an extension during the off-season but James just might wait it out looking to see if more help will arrive in Cleveland. Whether LeBron will re-sign now or ever will remain a mystery and like I said, it's definitely too early to say.

This picture has been floating around for a bit, but I thought that it was funny for right now and felt like sharing. Too soon? Nah. Chill Cleveland fans, got love for you!

Can't Touch This: Hammertime!

When in doubt (or need a few extra bucks) and looking to get your career back on track, do a reality television show. Shoot, that’s what I would do. Families love having camera crews in their homes and every moment being tapped. Right? Well, MC Hammer (yes, that MC Hammer) comes to A&E with Hammertime. I bet they worked really hard on that title. It was probably a very short meeting that started with, “how about ‘can’t touch this’” and continued to “what about ‘hammertime’”. Meeting adjourned. Done.

Hammer says in one of the promo videos for the show, “I never left, you just didn’t know where to find me.” Were you looking? Last time I saw dude he was doing one of those ‘Cash for Gold’ commercials. Guess that was part of the comeback strategy.

According to A&E “Hammertime is a reality series that focuses on the Hammer family as they live their not-so-simple lives in Tracy, California. Having a family and re-launching the Hammer empire is not an easy task, but with wisdom, faith and a relentless tenacity to strive through adversity, this family is stronger than ever.”

Oh, this should be entertaining to watch. If we’re lucky, we’ll even go into the studio and witness MC Hammer blessing the microphone creating another timeless classic (riiiight). Nah, I have respect for dude. As long as he’s not doing a dating show, I’ll see what’s up with it. You can catch the first episode, Sunday June 14 on A&E at 10pm.

Tha Lady Blogga on Fashion: The Recession Hits the Runway…

Many people are being wiped off the economic map by the recession, but I had no idea that Haute Couture designers were feeling it as well. Yes, Tha Lady Blogga is a bit of a label whore so this news is making me tear up as I type.

Christian LaCroix, has officially declared insolvency after not being able to negotiate a revamp of the label through this grueling recession. As people started to reduce their spending on luxury fashions, the label started to tumble. LaCroix is a creative designer who had great collections over time. But let’s face it... Who can afford to spend $1500 on a pair of slacks?

The label was started 22 years ago and was a huge hit in France and then filtered over into the States. Two of my favorite women Patsy and Edina, of the British Comedy (BBC TV) “Absolutely Fabulous”, were huge fans of the designer. Both he and his designs were often featured on the show. Aw heck... Even Lil’ Kim referenced him in “Crush on You” – Hardcore Album “You gotta hit me off. Buy this girl gifts of course. So I look slick, in my six, with my Christian LaCroix.” Despite her plastic appearance, the girl knows fashion... LOL. Hopefully one of the more stable designer labels can pick him up and he can get back on his feet from there.

People really are going broke. I guess $500 really is too much to spend on a T-Shirt. Designers should probably take note and think about how they are going to survive this Recession. The prices have to match the economy or else folks can’t keep up. That’s the bottom line. Let me just say that I am sure Christian LaCroix won’t be the last designer to feel the effects of this faltering economy. Hmmmmm... Wonder who’s next??

Which Nike Commercial Is The Best?

Over the years, Nike has put together some classic commercials. After catching the new LeBron and Kobe series of commercials, I'd decided to throw up some of the other commercials from over the years. You have Michael Jordan and Mars Blackmon (Spike Lee). You have Penny Hardaway and Little Penny (Chris Rock's voice... yes, that's a big ass cordless phone in his hand). Then you have the LeBron James and Kobe Bryant commercial. Which one do you think is the best?

What I'm Listening to Right Now ... Glenn Lewis

Track is called Storm. It's an older track. Don't know if most have heard of it. I'm guilty of being late on this. Especially being an R&B fanatic as I claim to be. Seriously wish it was my job to just listen to music and let the world know of it. But I digress. Take a listen to the Canadian born Glenn Lewis, aka Glenn Ricketts, singing Storm. It's on repeat for me.

Star x Buc Wild: T.I., Informant?

O and I have definitely talked offline about our opinions on this TI thing. He's locked up now, but you have to wonder how you can get a year and a day on federal gun charges. Hey, I won't claim to know everything about this TI case or federal gun charges but you think about the type of time other folks get for what you would probably say are lesser charges, and then you might question TI's sentence. He said during his reality show when asked by Sway on the reunion episode, that if he was an informant you could easily figure that out by doing a little bit of investigation. I don't know, but Star and Buc Wild raise points in this video on VladTV.com. Check it out.

“unfollowdiddy because 112 isn’t just their name, it’s their account balance.”

Dear Sean,

Here’s the irony, the folks that are twittering unfollowdiddy comments for the most part never followed you on twitter. They never locked in homie. I’d imagine that many however at some point were fans of artists signed to Bad Boy. You can tell, because they know most of your artists and are concerned with their whereabouts. Do you even remember most of the artists that have been mentioned? The truth is they’ve stopped following you Sean in the non-twitter world a long, long time ago and the last 24 hours has provided them the opportunity to vent some of the frustrations with you Mr. Ciroc Obama (I hope that there is some bill that President Obama is preparing to sign to end the use of this ignorant nickname by the way).

Their tweets, while funny hold some truths. Sure, careers fade and artists come and go, but they seem to do so in record numbers over at Bad Boy. What happened to Total? Where is Stevie J? Why wasn’t Mario Winans more successful? Where the hell is Carl Thomas? Where’s that girl group Dream? And, damn that was wrong what went down with Shyne. Sean, this is real talk.

Are you locked in? Because we damn sure know your twitter profile is locked down. A celebrity with a private profile? Must be plotting behind the scenes. I’d imagine that you wish Charles Hamilton would get punched in the face again so that the tide could shift away from you in the land of twitter.

By the way, “they’re haters” isn’t going to work. Can’t shrug your shoulders and think that using the over used term is going to make it all right. Why are they haters because they think folks should unfollow you? Sean, stop being so narcissistic and thinking everything is about you. Be humble for a moment and consider it a wake up call. A realization that you once had very talented artists on your roster and when you became the number one client, we all found that a bit suspect. They’re not haters, just folks with strong opinions. Come back down to earth brother.

Sure you’re a brilliant businessman but so is a pimp. And we’ve watched you Sean, pimp artist after artist. Most recently we’ve watched you create a male and female group on reality television. Then we watched Danity Kane fall apart, and that was really no surprise. One because creating a group on television and expecting them to stay together is like having a successful relationship from a dating reality show. But also because Bad Boy is the alleged label where artist go if they want to disappear forever like they’re in the witness protection program.

Sean, instead of calling folk haters, you could have acknowledged them. Let them know you hear their concerns, and then tell us where Black Rob and others are. Not acknowledging them and trying to discount them by calling them haters is a real case of bitchassness. This unfollowdiddy thing was just showing you that folks would like to remove the situation from the situation (even if your numbers are rising). Wake up. Are you locked in to that?

I’d like to leave you with one of my favorite unfollowdiddy comments: “Unfollowdiddy because his fine print reads, bullets, bars, set-ups, disappearing, snitching and fading careers”

Ahhhhhhhh!!!! Saw this piece, that is apparently of Madonna and her former husband Guy Ritchie, and had to share. The shocker is that it's for sale. Hey, I never quite understood art so I won't claim to be an expert but this piece scares me.

The UnFollowDiddy Movement

Sean "P. Diddy" Combs passed the one million followers mark on Twitter and recorded a message to his followers while on his jet, that he posted upon landing. It was a big moment for Diddy, who hit his followers with "WE DID IT!!!! A MILI A MILI A MILI!!! 1 MILLION FOLLOWERS!!! "

But almost immediately after passing one million followers, the unfollowdiddy movement started on twitter (we fully support... haha), quickly moving up the trending topics on twitter, above all the playoff and proposition 8 talk. How'd it start? @FoxxFiles claims responsibility for starting the movement.

Chris Foxx aka @FoxxFiles

"So tonight I started #unfollowdiddy which rose to #1 trending topics, Puff sent out subliminals to me and then blocked me for the 4th time," @FoxxFiles sent out in a Tweet during the early morning hours of May 27th.

"My name is Chris Foxx and yes I started #unfollowdiddy take that take that I see them subliminals," @FoxxFiles continued on Twitter.

@FoxxFiles "locked in" and went hard on pushing the unfollowdiddy movement and many folks joined in with reasons you should un-follow the music mogul. It quickly became hilarious to follow.

Here are a few:

"unfollowdiddy b/c they saw craig mack on Crenshaw selling pagers! *smh*"

"unfollowdiddy because he never shared his Proactiv with Craig Mack"

"unfollowdiddy because 112 isn't just their name its their account balance LMAO!!"

"unfollowdiddy Because somewhere Craig Mack is freestyling and broke, and that aint right."

"unfollowdiddy because Mario Winans COULD HAVE had a career."

"unfollowdiddy cuz hes in full promote mode for his album and everybody else is on the waiting list"

"unfollowdiddy Cause Ciroc Obama is ignorant"

"unfollowdiddy 'cause Carl Thomas wishes he never met him..at allllllll"

"unfollowdiddy for making Bad Boy an artist cemetery"

Diddy responded to the movement with this tweet, "Life is short! Use your time wisely! Only a fool waste time on negativity! While your trying to tear me down I'm already onto my next dream!"

Diddy followed it with, "I Love u even when you don’t love ME! I will always love you! I LOVE YOU! I believe in you! The devil is a liar! LETS GO!!!"

I had initially imagined Diddy sitting somewhere, shaking his head and mumbling "b*tcha**ness" as the unfollowdiddy trend rose on twitter. But Mr. Ciroc Obama (a name which I think President Obama should put an end to immediately) keeps the followers coming.

Because while it appeared that Diddy's numbers were going down for a moment, his numbers quickly reversed and were on a quick rise. So, perhaps the unfollowdiddy had the opposite result but reading the reasons why you should un-follow, were hilarious in itself (which could be considered a small victory).

“Ok enough of the games! I'm still here and aint goin nowhere! Go to sleep and when you wake up ill be at the finish line waitin for you! Lol” Diddy sent out in a tweet while comfortably above one million followers.

And in an effort to change the tide and prove the might of Diddy, he sent out the following tweet "#luvfollowingdiddy !!!! retweet and show them thev power of positivity! lets go!!! lol" Which as of writing this, has already found it's way on to the twitter trending list.

I wish more folks woke up and paid attention to the crazy stuff that Diddy does. It really appears that Bad Boy is the label artist go to disappear. Total? Craig Mack? Dream? Danity Kane? Carl Thomas? Oh, I can go on. Their number one client will always be Diddy.

But, hey folks ... follow away.

Politics With Tha Lady Blogga: The Bronx is in the HOUSE!!!!! (Literally)

So I am listening to President Obama talk about Sonia Sotomayor (a name with such a ring to it), the Supreme Court nominee and I am grinning from ear to ear. He is talking about “Cardinal Spellman” and “the Bronx”…

We thought we made strides with electing an African American President but a Hispanic woman from the Bronx to serve on the Supreme Court??? No me digas…

For those of you who are unaware of who she is, Sonia Sotomayor started as the Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan and she blossomed from there. As the Presidents changed, she remained a fixture in the court systems. From Princeton, Yale, Manhattan Federal Court, and Appeals Court, she paved her way to the White House. And even though her road to appointment will not be easy, I am sure she will be a shoe-in.

Sotomayor remained active in her community as well. She is a hard-core Yankees fan and continues to keep up with what’s going on in the Bronx. I had the pleasure of hearing her speak at a Conference a few years ago and I was blown away. Her focus and message of motivation for young people was inspiring, even for me. She reminded the audience that it is not where you are from but where you want to be. Being a young girl from a Bronx Housing Project now being appointed in the White House, she speaks the truth.

"I am the Victim"

I don't care how many times I see this chin check, it's funny each time. It's funny because for a moment Charles Hamilton looks like he choked up and was on the verge of tears. It's also funny because it took the other dude like a solid minute to figure out what was going on. Needless to say, it's the punch that went viral and Chuck has tried to get ahead of it ever since. I wonder how that's working out, because he's been the butt of most jokes over the weekend.

Briana, the chick who tagged that glass jaw of his wrote on her blog a day later about the incident, "We seriously have a sick, dysfunctional, high school relationship. But... it is what it is. Like I said earlier: I DID NOT MEAN TO DECK HIM. I was holding it back but the more I thought about what he said the more I wanted to hit him."

Sick, dysfunctional relationship? Does this mean that Chuck gets his chin checked often and this is the first time it was caught on camera?

It is interesting to raise the point that if this was a woman that got punched on video, we'd all be pretty pissed. But I also wonder if we don't care much and are okay with it because it's both funny and Chuck's arrogance deserved it. Well, Star sounds off on the subject on VladTv.com and it's pretty funny. Check the vid.

“Three strikes you out… I pity the pirates…errrr”

During the Cubs game on Monday, Mr. T threw out the first pitch and also blessed the mic with, “take me out to the ball game” or at least his version of the song. There are a couple of things that just go wrong and amount to an operation fail. First of all he’s rocking 1990 hammer pants that oh by the way is the American flag, with a matching bandana. Secondly, he sings like the drunken uncle that you are trying to get to sit down at every family function because he wants to do his version of some Temptations song, but doesn’t quite know the words. Cool the Cubs wanted to provide their fans with more entertainment than they probably bargained for. Saw this clip on Sports Center and I’m still laughing!

Lets Make The Next Krush Groove

If they made Krush Groove today, who would be featured in the flick? The 1985 movie featured heavy weights like Run DMC, The Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, New Edition, Sheila E. and so many other cameos.

Let me throw out a few heads that would be dope in the newer flick … Little Brother, The Roots, Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Meth, Redman, KRS-One and Dead Prez. Maybe even feature cameos from heads like Kanye, Blu, Oddisee, Murs, Pharoahe, and Drake. I’m going to even throw Raheem DeVaughn, Alicia Keys, John Legend and Mary J. in for good measure. The cast possibilities are endless. What are your thoughts? Who would you throw in the mix?

Obviously, a classic is a classic and no need to recreate but how dope would it be to have another legendary hip-hop flick. I think we could use one. Just think of that soundtrack.

Tha Lady Blogga Sounds Off...

Best I Ever Had? Celebrity “hook up” rumors are great. But what’s even better is the artists’ excuses or denials to those rumors. Recently, Rihanna and Drake were spotted in Lucky Strike Bowling alley sippin’ whiskey and apple juice, making out and getting cozy. It seems that since the Rihanna and Chris Brown episode, she has been finding all kinds of ways to get attention. Before this, she was seen getting cozy with a female cohort…

Drake decided to clear up the rumor by calling Rosenberg, a popular NYC on-air personality. Listen for yourself and decide if his performance and denial are genuine...

What Would You Do with $6 mil? Dammit man … These kinds of things never happen to me.

Westpac Bank, which is a popular bank in New Zealand, mistakenly gave a business account $6.1 million dollars when they asked for a $6,000 overdraft. The account belonged to a couple who owned a New Zealand gas station. Upon discovery of the funds, they withdrew it and BOUNCED!!! They locked up the gas station and fled the country.

The couple was not able to get all of the money withdrawn as the bank recovered $1.85 million of it. The bank is working feverishly to recover the money. Interpol has been called in to help find the couple who are rumored to be in Hong Kong.

Honestly people… What would you do?

This mix-up was generated by human error, not a computer glitch. The couple is well known in the neighborhood. Their identity has not been released to the public, since this is a pending Interpol case. Fellow business owners who knew the couple described them as “nice” and “honest”… Apparently “honest” depends on what is at stake. The bank is angry with the couple for taking the funds and are asking that they pay it back. Westpac Bank is treating this as a robbery and calling the funds “stolen”. They are looking to file criminal charges against the couple.

I definitely am not mad at them for acting fast and taking the money. It is a tad bit dishonest, but in this day and age, who wouldn’t take the money and run?? If a bank mistakenly dropped $6 million dollars in your bank account, what would you do with it? And don’t say return it because I know that’s a lie!!

Can't Beat 'em, Join 'em? Saw this clip from the Ellen show and was slightly disturbed. Instead of being pissed that she’s associated with such wackness, she embraces it and does the Halle Berry dance… Sad. This track is like garbage on the street on a hot NYC day.

Police Brutality

When will all this end? Probably never. Cops like these give the good ones a really bad name. Guy flips out the van, lays lifeless on the ground, the officers come running swinging nightsticks and closed fists and repeatedly beat on the alleged victim/criminal for about 11 seconds. I watched this video 4 times and still am in shock. Don't know why. It's not like it's the first time. But it clearly needs to be the last. Although this video was taken last year, it still reflects on the still occurring problem we face in America with some authority.

Birmingham Police Repeatedly Beats On Man...

(The video shows police pursuing Anthony Warren's van on Jan. 23, 2008. One officer on foot was injured when the van swerved through traffic. The van overturned on a ramp, ejecting Warren, who lay motionless as officers ran toward him.)

Country Chris Brown?

Word around the world wide web is that Chris Brown is considering doing a song titled "Trapped In A Dream", a song that might make his next album, with a country twist to it. I'm guessing him and his peoples are trying any and everything to spin his negative press and publicity around. But country music? I've heard reports that country music is the most depressing genre of them all. Personally, it's not for me. But I guess, going through all the legal drama that Mr. Brown is, you'll try anything.

Question I have is, will he try to remix that dance moves and throw a few back flips into them or krump it up with Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, Kenny Chesney, Martina McBride or whoever? It's just the Krump. It's just the Krump. Haha. Good luck with that, Chris.

The Reality That Is Reality

Peeped this cartoon in the morning paper and wanted to share. It’s the sad reality that is reality television. It's Trash. From The Real House Wives (of wherever) to Daisy of Love to New York Goes to Work to Real Chance of Love to College Hill to Celebrity Rehab - Reality Television provides a warped look at society and reflects the f**kery of fools. And Big Brother monitors it all and surprisingly there are people out there who think that it’s all actually reality (insert creative editing of shows to provide 'reality'). Video killed the radio star, and then reality television killed real television. The funny thing is that the folks that appear on reality television actually think they are celebrities, when in reality they are folks with no real talent and our the court jesters that we laugh at for making fools out of themselves. But hey, keep the shows coming so that I can continue to clown them on the blog.

TELL 'EM WHY YOU MAD: The Way it Shouldn't Be...

Word has it that Keyshia Cole's BET reality series "The Way It Is" won't be back for another season, yet her mom Frankie and sister Neffe may be coming back for a spin off series on the network. Apparently the show will focus on the growth and independence of the ridiculous mother-sister duo. Shoot me. Black Entertainment Television fails to put positive networking on television time and time again. While Frankie and Neffe are hilarious and their antics ridiculous to watch, they set black women back decades with their ignorance.

Memo to BET ... make better programming decisions. Seems like the only DVDs they own are Color Purple, Lean on Me and Soul Plane and then they offer crap like Hell Date and College Hill as their original programming. Damn, remember the days of Video Soul and Teen Summit?

Decline ... sad.

Check it ... Jason Caesar

I have a deep respect for an artist when they can do the acoustic thing and Jason Caesar definitely does it well in this clip. I respect dude for his talent. We've featured him on the site before, but wanted to shout him out again.

Check out more from him on his MySpace: (myspace.com/jasoncaesar)

Sonic Boom!

I suppose that's one way to win a battle. Charles Hamilton gets served up! Ouch! Wonder if he's calling Barbara Walters to tell his story. "Uh, what had happened was..." Riiiight.

Beyonce's Ego: Great another black & white video

Wait, is this the video for Ego, Diva or Single Ladies? Doesn’t it seem like so many of Beyonce’s videos since Single Ladies have pretty much the same copy/paste formula? Wear something skimpy and shake your ass with two other girls ... in black and white. I’m not complaining, just bringing attention to it.

Flyover Land Mixtape Vol 1.

Flyover Land Vol. 1 is a compilation mixtape from Midwest Broadcast featuring some exclusive and unreleased tracks from some talented emcees and producers out of the Midwest.

“It’s named Flyover Land in reference to the common notion that the Midwest is a region not known for producing proficient hip-hop artists, and can thus be overlooked,” according to the email that accompanied the link to the download.

There are some dope artists out of the Midwest, many of which have been featured on The Mad Bloggers page. So I was definitely pleased when I received the link and definitely pleased after downloading and listening to the project. Flyover Land includes artists like Soulcrate Music, Heiruspecs, Guante, M.anifest, Muja Messiah and many others. There are sixteen quality tracks and uninterrupted hip-hop (that’s right, no DJ yelling over the first 60 seconds of each song).
